Agree that the book ranking moves up by thousands for a purchase.
My book sold 1 copy in India. It now ranks 500 in overall Amazon.in rank.
In the US market I think the number of book sale grows exponentially as the rank gets better than 1000.

One thing to note is that writing is not a salary. It varies tremendously. Last year, I made more than enough money to live on (more than with my day-job). The thing is, that money is not guaranteed for this year. January was fine, but it has dipped since then, and unless I finish my next book soon, April of this year might give my low month of last year a run for it's money (last year's low month, coincidently April, was 10% of my high month, September).

"Agree with the fact that people might get negative returns.

What's funny is how many people are making money claiming to promote books.
Review services, email promotion , free book lists and advertising.
This stuff costs 10's to hundreds of dollars." - CodingPalz

Almost no one mentions editors - there are many different kinds with different skill levels - or proof readers or critiquers. They cost money as well and it isn't $10 per hour. When an editor is mentioned, it usually sounds like a single engagement between writer and editor. Sometimes, depending on the skill levels of both writer and editor, an editor may go through an entire manuscript three, four, or five times, once per draft. Regardless of what most people want to believe, the best editors also cost the most money. Three times through a 100,000 word manuscript can easily run $20,000.

Having written that, I know someone will claim they spent $40 on a book cover, self-edited their book and made a zillion dollars on it. Good for them.

I paid a very well-known, established editor $1200 for a 60,000 word book. The thing is, while quite good, I have used a couple of editors I have found here in the forum $200-300, and those editors have been just as effective, in my humble opinion.

Don't see why people are reluctant to give their own numbers. I've been self pubbing through KDP for 3 years now, and this past year I made $41,000. For me it's a full time job and I put out a 30,000 word novella every 2 weeks (which is far more writing than most people do, I know) but it works for me. I have 74 episodes out of a planned 100 out now, and I truly believe having not one, but TWO books on the newly released 30 day lists has helped attract a trickle of new readers that has slowly built into a reader base. In a week I make the transition into the traditionally published ranks via Harper Collins, so my days as a full indie are over. I'm curious to see how much that exposure drives my KDP sales up, but I can attest that KDP does work if you can find the right mix of genre, publishing rate, and writing skill. You just gotta be patient and I would highly recommend writing an old style SERIAL, perhaps in addition to any novels you have, just to hit those newly released lists. DO NOT chop up your novel and put it out in pieces, that IS NOT a serial. Serial writing is different, with the comparison being a TV show to a Movie. You gotta go about it differently, but if you want to attract attention in the sea of books flooding in, the newly released lists are the way to go IMO, so get something out there regularly...and make it good. That's the key above all else. Give the readers what they want to read so they will come back for more once they find you.
It's that 'finding' part that drives so many people, including me, nuts.

The beginning of the month is always scary. The reports refresh, and until you see consistent sales in the new month, it can be an anxious period.
