I really am just about ready to give up on trying to publish an ebook with this idiotic company.
I've just spent 2 days on help pages and forum trying to sort out issues re uploading/publishing cover and product images because of inadequate instructional info for beginners and was now ready to go ahead and (try) to successfully upload and publish.
So first step I go to update my account info re nominating bank account for payments and the first thing that happens is that after filling in name address and country (UK) and selecting the EFT payment method for payments from amazon.com I'm confronted with a request for my "routing number" after the request for the account number. Assuming that Amazon is aware that in the UK there are no "routing" numbers but "sort codes" I filled in the sort code but it won't accept it saying that it's invalid and should contain 9 numbers. UK sort codes have 6 numbers and neither my account number or sort code is "invalid".
Either Amazon is run by clowns or they're actively attempting to discourage non US based authors.
The question why Amazon refuses to use PayPal has been asked more times than I can count, but Amazon refuses to give an answer.
It would make life so much easier for everyone, and every other major retailer on the internet make payment via PayPal available(On Ebay it's the ONLY option), so I really have no idea why it's such a big problem for Amazon.
I can offer a probable reason for Amazon having nothing to do with PayPal beyond the usual reason that the companies are competitors.
PayPal pretends to be a bank, but it is not and there are not appropriate regulations in place. Many people have disputes with PayPal and think the company sux lemons... disclaimer - I am one of them.
PayPal will freeze accounts just because some whacky rep feels like it. With frozen accounts and questionable banking practices being frequent, Amazon would be tied to many disputes over time. PayPal is the reason that I have not sold on eBay since 2006 - had a dispute with a buyer way back then (over a camera).
This past July PayPal froze my account, but lucky me as I had just withdrawn my funds and they only managed to steal $34. Why? Because I "sell a book about escort services on my website". Duh - I had been selling all of my ebooks on my website and blogs for 2 years at that point and all of the information, including my publishing company info was on this account. It was tied to my LLC bank account and PayPal had issued me a debit card (a regular MasterCard). The debit card was cancelled the same time that they froze the account, causing me numerous problems.
Have you ever read through the PayPal forums? Lots of people being scammed by PayPal - I discovered that I was far from alone, but should have heeded earlier advice given right here by "notjohn". Oh well - as stated they didn't get much in my case as they usually do from others. Bad timing on their part.
Screw PayPal. Hope that helps to answer your question.
Exactly, the United States uses the so-called ABA code, which is a 9-digit-framework. The European countries use the IBAN system, the framework of which varies depending on the country from 16 to 34 digits.
You can make a book cover for free at Createspace then take a screen capture and save to jpg for your ebook cover.
that's what I've done with my last book, in fact I created 3 different versions based on that one Createspace free one, for 3 versions of the same book-so that it all ties in visually for the person browsing through Amazon.
