You all do realize that it is still the YEAR of Titanic....The year Titanic went down 100 years ago and will be until December's END.

Here is an article in WSJ espousing the truth in FICTION. 30 years of reseach on and off went into my Children of Salem. I did a helluva lot of research too for Bismarck 2013 and for Titanic 2012 - not just historical but scientific.

J. Bruce Ismay at the time of the disaster, as chairman and managing director of the White Star Line, was held to blame for the loss of the Titanic by the American press; especially those controlled by William Randolph Hearst, a newspaper magnate and one of the richest and most powerful men in America. Ismay had met Hearst years before, when he was White Star's agent in New York. The two men disliked each other intensely and Ismay's refusal to cooperate with the press infuriated the newspaperman storing up problems for the future. Almost twenty years after their first meeting it was the Hearst syndicated press who prosecuted a vicious campaign against him, a full-page cartoon depicting Ismay in a lifeboat watching the sinking Titanic and captioned, "This is J. Brute Ismay" and "We respectfully suggest that the emblem of the White Star be changed to that of a yellow liver." from the Titanic Historical Society.

Finally was able to get Amazon to display all the photos in my book TITANIC 1912.
It has never been difficult to have images display prior to this one, likely just another case of the noids.

Hearst wielded so much power at the time that he, like a Murdoch today, could make or break people through the power of the press, and he did so at his whim. He became the subject of the film Citizen Kane when someone of considerable guts took him on by penning the film -- Can you guess who> also this man made news via a radio broadcast of The War of The Worlds when people tuning in thought it was ACTUAL NEWS CAST and that the aliens had landed. His name of course -- the man who became synomous with cool and No Wine Before its Time catch phrase? Name that fella -- ORSON WELLS. He purely, purely hated Hearst and the feeling was mutual.

The lofty New York Times paid $500 to the wireless operator who survived the sinking of the Titanic, Harold Bride, for his story. The deal was struck while Bride was on board the Carpathia heading for New York with the 705 survivors. A virtual blackout of news from the survivors clamped down over the Carpathia with little news transmitted from the ship. Marconi officials had sent a message to the wireless operators to "keep your mouth shut! Big Money!" and so forth. Checkbook journalism has been around for a long time.

Getting the photos to be visible was a bear on this book and Amazon staffers were eager to help and send lots of ideas, but in the end it was just a matter of clearing the decks and starting again.
Good luck to all and God bless you all real good.

There were four surviving officers of the Titanic and all of them were brought in to testify at the U. S. Senate Commerce Committee hearings on the sinking of the ship, which convened just three days after the disaster. In sharp contrast to 100 years later, the United States Senate has not passed a budget in three years.
The reason the Senate Committee set up hearings in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York is that the government intercepted a message from White Star Line President Bruce Ismay in which he planned to leave New York at once.

In looking around for new marketing methods, I have taken a shot at the Book Expo in New York last year when they held a self-pub conference the day prior to their week-long event for the major publishers. The fee for registration for the 200 or so Indie authors paid for a series of panelists on various subjects and a row of display tables were set up in the lobby. Those tables were rented by various outfits such as Kindle and outfits that specialize in formatting and promotions. All in all, it was a big waste of money. While these forums can sometimes be tedious, lurking here and seeing many good ideas pitched to those inquiring about how to make their books better and to market them prove to be worthwhile. There are the occasional lectures from those who appear to be "gatekeepers" but like most clubs, there are always the school bus patrols who like to throw their weight around. Professor Rob Walker runs this neat online college course in writing on these forums in this one and others that he has run, such as What Mioves Kindle Books Off The Shelf 1 & 2. For the many others who have plenty of good advise, you all have my thanks. I have and will attempt to share my own experiences in the hope that it may help others.
I had no idea I would do a second book involving the Titanic after my first one: Follow Titanic. What I found was an angle that no one else had explored beyond the obvious headlines of the news coverage after the ship sank.
The lesson I will take from this experience is to keep digging and new opportunities may present themselves.
Good luck to all and God bless you all real good.

There are some folks here who are crying the blues about the KDP Select program and its free days destroying the Kindle book market. There are other threads and articles linked to this forum showing the fantastic sales being run up by Joe Konrath and Nick Russell, two of my now-favorite authors. I checked out one book by a complainer with the intention of buying it before it went free and saw that it was only out on the market for a couple of months. Instead of buying the book to support the new author I decided to instead use one of my Amazon Prime free downloads, for which he will still get paid.
But it hit me like a brick: The authors who are enjoying good sales have this in common --- they promote, they have more than one book and they use KDP Select Free Days.
Just like so many of the entitled class of America today, apparently we have a class of authors who don't want to endure misery and low sales on their way to the big time.
Good luck to all and God bless you all real good.

dovetailing into what Ken is saying, I have noticed those most negative are indeed ONE Book wonders sitting around wondering why thier one book is not earning them a massive fortune.... So many young people today want IMMEDIATE gratification. Joe Konrath is a personal friend who I have watched work his ASS OFF, literally...has dropped weight sweating promoting his works. He believes in his work and he is driven even more than I AM....

That is what it takes, a Titanic Effort to promote work you have Titanic FAITH in.

ALL HAIL CEASAR! Amazon is the Great Emancipator of writers!

I was about to buy one chap's book that was pissing and moaning about sales and when I went to his page to do so, found that his book was only out about 10 weeks and was his only effort.
Great Expectations await those who want to be instant Kindleaires as part of the Great American Entitled Class.
Drill, ye tarriers drill, work all day for sugar in your tay, down beyond the railway...

I yield to Professor Walker and point to his magnificent effort at churning out his pauperback books.

Kindle Select is an effective way to merchandise your books, should you choose to embrace the program. I do.
