I have recently just plain lost the ability to open any of my reports in Excel. I just get blank pages. However, if I download Excel documents from other sites, they open fine. So I'm sure this is something quite simple that I'm missing in my settings or something. Any ideas? I would appreciate any help you can provide.

I'd first check to see if something may have happened to your reports. Re-download one or two (save as a slightly-different name) and see if Excel can read those.

If Excel can't read those, then I'd try the spreadsheet reader that comes with OpenOffice, a very nice free product that includes a word processor and other features, too.

This is apparently something to do with Amazon. I can send the apparently blank document to friends and none of them can get it to open every time. One has managed to get it to open long enough to see what is was but then the document went blank again. And this is new, for me. I've never had problems with my reports before. So now what do I do?

Up until a few days ago, I could open my reports without any problems.
Recently, when I tried to open the September one, it says I need to install Excel??
I can still open my other excel files, but not my reports from the Amazon site anymore.

The old reports that I have downloaded onto my computer, have the .xls extention, while on Amazon,
the reports recently have changed to .xlsx.

I tried just changing the extension, but when I open it, it's full of gibberish, as in;
PK#OI _rels/.rels’ÁjÃ0 †ï}

I use Excel 2000

Can anybody help?

Bizarre. I just checked my August report again, and I can read it fine. Try re-posting your question in the General Questions forum; more people read that and you might get some ideas from folks.

My September report still had the.xls format, so maybe it's something that is country-specific.

Either way, if you have Excel 2000, you can install the free converter from Microsoft to open .xlsx files.

Problem "solved".

I installed Microsoft Excel Viewer, it's a free download, and it's about 50Mb.
I just had to look for the language I needed.

I still very much prefer using my Excel 2000 version, but now, it least, I can check my reports!

Its no doubt very helpful to install the viewer but I can't require everyone I send these reports to, to download the viewer. And someone said their September report works. What September report? I don't have one.

The September prior-month report, which just came out, is in xlsx format rather than xls. I don't know if they've gone back and changed the earlier ones or not. This is like the difference between .doc and .docx.

Anyone with a more recent version of MS Office will be able to open xlsx, and, as already noted, you can get a patch. I'd been storing my prior-month reports on my old computer, but clearly I can't do that anymore.

I have Excel 2010 which reads xlsx files just fine normally, and I was having a problem seeing the September report as well. The data was there, but the screen was blank. I found this solution online, and it seems like it fixed it for me. Hope it helps some of you!

Click the Excel file, load up the empty Excel document and go to View -> Full Screen to see if then shows (Escape to exit). If it works, close and restart the same way and it should be OK again.

Donna, I'm a bit confused at this response. Do you think I don't know where my reports are?

I have now just had time to fathom why I - who live in the UK - can't open my September report. It's because despite KDP stating at the top of the download page "only in Microsoft Excel format - XLS" September's has been saved for download in XLSX.

So before I go to the faff of having to download a converter, my question is this: is the XLSX download a mere glitch by KDP, or is this now going to be the norm? Or will I actually have to ask via "Contact". Needless to say all my Excel spreadsheets are XLS.

edit just sent an email query to Contact. Will advise response when it comes.

FYI, the OpenOffice spreadsheet program can read xlsx files.

Yeah, I've always had better results with OO than with the Microsoft Xcel Viewer. (That said, I haven't looked at a report since July and don't plan to do so until January. Maybe I'll be surprised.)

Good luck! -- NJ
