I was surprised how fast my book showed up. Though published in other areas, this is my first science fiction novel and also is the first in a series.
Description (from Amazon)
With his world of Kodomir overrun by brutal conquerors, Stevar Polrany makes a desperate escape to find allies who can help. But in the 29th Century, the Settled Worlds have plunged into war and few care about the fate of a backwater farming world. Against his own best judgment, he finds that all he can do is hire a small mercenary unit called the Wild Geese. As the Kodomiri form an underground, interstellar maneuvers try to make Kodomir into a pawn on a board measured in light years. Igniting the fuse of rebellion, Polrany faces a terrible choice: use the mercenaries one last time to free a thousand Kodomiri held as slaves on a desolate, frozen mining world or use them to strike at his enemy and aid the rebellion.
Mercenary’s Heart, the first of the Wild Geese novels, explores the issues of why humans fight, what loyalty means, and the true heart of courage by following professional soldiers, mercenaries, politicians, and ordinary people as they confront choices of life and death. Steven Silver wrote Mercenary’s Heart drawing upon his work as a psychologist and historian, giving the reader a realistic view of war and its consequences, from the cockpits of human brain-driven war machines to the cells of interrogators to politicians to farmers.
I have just published a biography (my first book) on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) called "The Redeemable Curse" available on createspace.com, amazon.com and kindle ebook. If you read the book, please do not forget to provide an online review. Thanks.
This true story presents the most challenging period in the lives of a young married couple caught unawares into the diabolic clutches of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). It is a true account of their day-to-day indefatigable struggles, unflinching hopes, heartrending disappointments, personal guilt-ridden failures and jubilant triumphs in dealing with one of the most debilitating disorders in modern times.
The central figures of the story are Daniel, born and brought up in the USA, and Sonia, an Indian who immigrated to the USA in the mid-nineties. Daniel lived most of his life suffering from BPD until correctly diagnosed in 2008. Starting June of that year, he underwent Dialectical Behavior Therapy for almost two years. Even though a short eight months of therapy revealed remarkable progress in his attitude, habits and behavior, long lasting benefits arose as treatment continued over an extended period. Two years of regular and intense therapy provided him deep insights into the other side of his personality that almost destroyed his life and marriage on many occasions. The book hopes to bring awareness to the impacted population and help them recognize symptoms of the illness in very early stages; accept its truly gruesome nature without any fear, shame or stigma; and find courage and strength to seek much needed medical help. The book also strives to inspire individuals suffering from BPD in recognizing that just as much as it was the job of Dr. Summers to “rid” Daniel of the monster created by the disorder, taking personal ownership and accountability was just as critical in his treatment and recovery.
University of Washington psychologist Marsha Linehan, one of the world's leading experts on BPD, describes Borderline individuals as “the psychological equivalent of third-degree-burn patients who have no emotional skin and even the slightest touch or movement can bring them immense suffering”. As many as 75% of these individuals hurt themselves, and approximately 10% commit suicide. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, BPD is an often misunderstood, serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image and behavior. It is a disorder of emotional dysregulation. This instability often disrupts family and work, long-term planning and the individual’s sense of self-identity. While less well known than schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), BPD is just as common. The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry conducted a study in 2008 of nearly 35,000 adults and found that 5.9% or 18 million Americans fit BPD diagnosis.
Written by a former war correspondent and international photojournalist.
Set in the 1980s at the height of political unrest in South Africa's black townships, this is the riveting story of a policeman, caught between two worlds and forced to make a terrible choice that could have catastrophic consequences.
It is a universal story of a man and his family's desperate struggles when they must face a crisis and from which there appears no escape.
You will not be able to put this book down and will not soon forget it!
