if I like a book I give it a top rating,
because the author has entertained me and I feel
deserves it for their work.

Well said...I tend to go this way too...and when I
see a review that's 3 star or lower and just rips a
good story to shreds because of the odd grammar or
spelling problem, I just get so annoyed...

I just don't get your sensibility. I like the occasional hotdog but if you rate a street vendors hotdog as equal to a magnificently prepared and presented five-course dinner, then you have no discrimination and your review is meaningless except that it does a great disservice to the chef; the hotdog guy won't give shit. After all he knows he is selling hotdogs.

If a rating system has any value to the customer or the artist then most books deserve no better than three stars, exceptionally well told and compelling stories should get four and only the rare masterpiece should get five; otherwise it is meaningless.

Aim a little higher.

Hey captain you are raising the bar a bit here, riffing on Conrad and Norman MacLean.

Well, I don't finish a book unless I find it interesting and compelling. So, my high ratings are well deserved. Then again I appreaciate fiction writing for what it is, entertainment. I'm not a snob, who doesn't consider a book top notch unless it's an earth shattering peice of genre.

And honestly it's just writing. Even some of these o so awesome authors that people look up too, aren't doing anything more than putting their thoughts down on paper. Every reader has their own perspective, two different people can read the same book and have tottally different opinions on it. That is the great thing about writing as an art.

I can see the genious in a work and someone else might think very little of it.

....aren't
doing anything more than putting their thoughts down
on paper.

You really think that all thoughts and all thinking are equal? Seriously? You think the last book you just managed to finish is just as good as the best you have ever read, that the thoughts that run through a crack whores addled brain are just as valuable as a well crafted attempt to understand some truth about the human condition?

You are wrong about writing just being about entertainment. Really good writing, like a really excellent meal, is as different from the dross as that meal is from a hot dog. It touches something shared by most of us and transcends the banal day to day existence we all live.

You eat the hot dog to live, but good writing like a fine meal makes life worth living, gives a purpose to the craftsman who creates it and makes all our lives richer.

You don't have to be a snob to notice that writing well is a skill that is attained through hard work and is not equally shared by all those who write.

Some crack whores are more in touch with the human condition than most writers I've met. Some are better writers for the experience

You are assuming that all books and all meals are on the same scale. If I say the courthouse hotdog cart is 5 out of 5, I assume that people know that is compared to other street vendors. If I give a book five stars, that is in relation to other books of its type, not the best book I've ever read.

However, even if you hold all books to the same scale, five stars would just mean that out of five randomly selected books, this was the best. Not the last five you read, since you presumably choose books that appeal to you, but random books. It's not that high of a standard.

Pure and simple. 5 star reviews should be up there with the best things you have ever read in your entire life!

Doesn't anyone read the directions anymore?

1-star = I hate green eggs and ham
2-star = I do not like green eggs and ham
3-star = I am indifferent to green eggs and ham
4-star = I like green eggs and ham
5-star = I love green eggs and ham

I suppose you can make up your own definitions for the number of stars to give, but thems the rules and Sam you aren't.
