Can I re-publish a KDP paperback through CreatSpace?

Quick question...

I published a collection of Irish wildlife and nature writing via KDP recently. I was planning to publish a paperback edition (since target market for this particular series would skew more print than eBook) when I noticed the "Publish Paperback" option on KDP and thought I'd give it a whirl.

However, since publishing last week I have some local booksellers and a couple of online outfits specialising in wildlife books asking if they can stock the paperback version. KDP doesn't yet offer extended distribution / wholesale prices... so my question is can I re-publish the paperback edition through Createspace to avail of these extended distribution options -- and if I choose to do so will I need to "unpublish" the paperback edition in KDP first.

Apologies if it's a silly question. I found plenty of threads on the forum talking about moving paperbacks from Createspace to KDP, but none talking about going the other way.

Cheers,

Calvin!

I asked this same question in another forum and was told that once I've published a book as a paperback in KDP I've more or less burned my bridges and I'm now unable to publish that same book on CreateSpace. I realize this was only one response, but I've emailed Amazon a couple of times asking the question, but they haven't ever responded. More opinions would be much appreciated.

It's not a silly question, but it does have a sad and frustrating answer: No.

From what has been posted by those who exercised the KDP-Print option, there is no going to CreateSpace afterwards.

You can't supply copies on your own because there is also no way to buy copies at cost. The dealers could buy from Amazon, but, lacking their 40% industry discount, don't count on it. Sorry.

It's all part of Amazon's inexplicable drive to force self-publishers to distribute only through Amazon. What you should now do is set up an account with IngramSpark and publish there. It will cost a few dollars, and there's a steeper learning curve, but you'll get a better result -- and you can hope to be included in libraries and bookstores.

Good luck! -- NJ

Someone posted here recently on how to do it, which I think meant unpublishing on KDP then starting again on CS and using a different ISBN.
However, if you only want a few copies, drop the price on KDP Print to the minimum selling price allowed, place your order and then put the price back up. You may find a few opportunistic sales when the price is down but I wouldn't worry about that though it might be worth putting an explanation up at the start of the blurb: "Flash Sale for Today Only!" or something similar. :)

Here's my post from another thread...

I also had an issue with KDP paperback conversion when I attempted to change the cover on one of my books. My cover artist did everything according to their guidelines, but I kept getting errors regarding size. I wrote to CreateSpace to see about returning to t hem and this was their response:

"I'm sorry that your experience with KDP Print has been unsatisfactory but you're able to republish your title through CreateSpace.

You'll need to republish it on CreateSpace with a new ISBN, you can either choose a CreateSpace assigned ISBN or purchase an ISBN. Once you've made your book available for sale contact us with your new ISBN so we can link your existing Amazon customer reviews to the new CreateSpace version of your book."

I obtained another ISBN # and resubmitted my book through CreateSpace just as I had done when I first published. Zero difficulties. My book with the new cover was approved for sale, and the world is good again. I hope this helps.

It's worth mentioning that after my book was republished with CreateSpace, they questioned whether I was the copyright holder d/t seeing the same book had previously been in print under another ISBN. A simple email stating you are the copyright holder is all they require. My book is now available again through CreateSpace.

Thanks for that explanation Lori. One final concern: if I unpublish my paperback books on Amazon and publish them with new ISBNs on CreateSpace, will Amazon link my ebooks to these print versions, or, because the Amazon print version has been deleted, will they ignore the CreateSpace version?

What if your first book was published through another source, niether create space nor KDP?. If I significantly changed it, (40% is what I read) and assign it a new ISBN number, technically I can call it a second edition and publish it through Create space? Anyone know? Its just that any changes I make through this publisher costs me $100s of dollars!! And I can never discount it or make any offers online. Help?

You should review your contract (or have your attorney do so) with the company to see what you need to do to claim publishing rights. If it's a vanity publisher, it may be no more than a letter (not an email) ending the contract.

That's the best news on this subject that I've heard in months. Thank you for posting it. Glad it worked out for you.

@everyone: DO NOT use this trouble-prone KDP Print. CreateSpace works; KDP Print is a minefield of problems.

Tanzzee,

I was told to notify them when my book was published under the new ISBN to link the reviews. I assumed this would include the ebook as well. I sent an email on the same day it was published, but I was told to wait 3-5 days to give it a chance to link up on its own. It didn't happen on its own, so I have to contact them and have them do it manually. I'll contact them today and let you know when/if the ebooks link with the paperback.

Oops. I'm supposed to wait 3-5 BUSINESS days. They still have today to link them. I'll contact them tomorrow if they don't link today and let you know what happens and when.

Just checked. My paperback and ebook (along with all my reviews) are all linked now! So to answer your question, yes, your ebook will be linked to your paperback with the new ISBN.

To add to what @Lori Weiss wrote:

I mistakenly thought the paperback option on my KDP page was Createspace. I formatted files and made a cover, and the experience was fairly pain-free, and the book went live within 12 hours through KDP. yesterday morning. It was when I went looking to buy an author proof, that I realized my mistake.

I found this thread and had some hope after hearing "No" everywhere else. I unpublished the paperback in KDP, waited about 12 hours, then uploaded the same file, and the same cover last evening into CreateSpace, and I was just notified now that everything went through fine, and I've ordered a copy.

No issues at all!

I published my first print book through KDP, then found this forum and all the advice concerning which is best (eBooks in KDP, print books in Createspace.
I emailed Createspace & received this reply....

Greetings from CreateSpace.

Thank you for your interest in starting a new title with CreateSpace.

You can publish your paperback and ebook through CreateSpace without taking out the books from KDP. Both books can publish simultaneously on Amazon but you need to assign different ISBN.

I did unpublish the KDP print book & it now shows up on Amazon as 'currently out of stock'

So you can ignore all the 'no' replies, I've kept the email from Createspace, so they can't really argue with their own advice, especially as both places are Amazon :)

I was going to say the same thing. But, AH! FINALLY! Someone who has the freaking COMMON SENSE to contact CreateSpace directly about this rather than rely on the distorted "wisdom" of others who swear up and down to know so much while apparently knowing nothing whatsoever. It's kind of like fake news spreading around. Only this kind messes with a person's livilihood.

Lori Weiss, I applaud you.

But sadly, even though you KNOW for sure what the actual scoop on this is, there will be those who choose to believe otherwise. They will even continue to ask around to be sure, just because "someone said" it couldn't be done at all. sigh CreateSpace is a phone call away. As Lori Weiss (and I) know, you can call them or email them and ask actual people questions there. They are very helpful.

Amazon owns CreateSpace and from everything I've been reading, it looks like eventually, they are going to eventually retire the platform altogether. So one day your only option will be to use the KDP paperback option.

Let's just hope by then they agree to give us author pricing like they do with CreateSpace. :)
