I think we might have those publisher on the run. They can't compete against 70% and they know it. To bad, so sad. I wonder if the slush piles are dwindling. Probably not, there are still those who think having a publisher makes them a "real author." Ha, we showed them!

Excellent post. You've captured the precise reasons I stopped writing for a very traditional publisher. I'm still on the Yahoo group with authors who have written for that publisher and there's been a thread going recently about all the now-famous (read successful) books that were turned down by big publishing houses. Who's your Daddy now?.
I love the freedom to write what I want. Thanks again for expressing that.

Great stuff Lins - and oh so true. It's so nice to be able to write what I want to write, not what someone else says I should be writing. Sure, I may not sell as many copies, or make as much money, but it sure feels great getting down my passion into words - and words that others can read, for not much money.

Thanks, Lins, for reminding us all about who we are and how good we can be. I agree with all the sentiments of other indies on this thread.

Keep writing and keep the faith. We CAN do it - in fact, we already are!

Well said! There's no other way I'd rather go! And having control...now that's awesome! I wouldn't give it up for anything and it's the best decision I've ever made. The best thing that ever happened to me was when those agents and publishers told me no. : )

Well said, Lindsay, was it last week you told us you were so dejected you were giving up? The break has done you a world of good, now get back to writing and get that passion into your next book!!

Got me! Yes, I had an epiphany moment...sort of. Well no, I didn't. I just got on with what everyone said to me. The encouragement, support and belief got me over my 'lump'. And then last night, well, clarity hit. (Doesn't happen too often, I can assure you, but it did lol)

Self belief is great if you have it. Trying to find it sometimes, can make you quite anxious. I guess it's just knowing where to look.. :-) and having some help, and amazing friends and camaraderie of course!

But we are ALL very special. We are all unique. We are all worthy!

I suppose this is what happens when you drink moonshine. You should let it ferment for a while longer.

Self belief is wonderful while it lasts, but, certainly for me and I suspect for everybody who's honest with themselves, self-doubt is the more common emotion. What we all need is the guts to ride out the self-doubt and get the job done. You've got the first part, now you just need to get down to writing again, the easy(?) part.
