I've been doing a little experimentation with promoting my book for free, and here are a few results...
I set it up for FREE all last weekend, and it was downloaded over 2400 times! I thought that was pretty good. The best part is that it put it up WAY higher in popularity in its categories, which I believed to make it more likely to sell after the promotion. I was right, and I sold 28 in three days after the promotion.
People are lazy. Over 2400 downloads, and NO ONE did a review.
It's a little depressing to know that that many people got my book for nothing.
FREE promotions will help sales!
Another thing I noticed, possibly because I'm a moron, is that there may be a ton more people looking for free kindle books on the weekend. I have it FREE again today (Friday) with hardly any downloads. I forgot that some people have jobs!
Hope this helps!
Oh, yeah. Here is my shameless promotion...
Download my GREAT children's picture book for FREE today only!
Don't miss out! http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007N8UPB6/ref=r_soa_w_d
If it is not FREE anymore, please buy it, and read it to your kids if you got 'em. They'll love it.
Great promotion. I love it! You're doing wonderful with so many downloads.
Giving away your books may help. It didn't help me that much. I gave away close to 6,000 books on a Thursday. I even broke into the top 100 of the Free Amazon e-book store at number 40. I made it to #1 in my genre categories. When the promotion was over, I only sold 5 books! Whoo Hooo! My sales suck. And out of all those people, no one reviewed. My reviews seem to come from Goodreads readers where I've been marketing. I'm thinking about giving up on KDP. It works for some, and not so good for others. I guess it all depends.
Wish I had seen this thread before committing to KDP Select. About 300 downloaded on the first free days just one day after publishing. I've seen about 35 paid downloads in the week since, but most of both the free and paid downloads were people in my own network.
How did you manage so many free downloads? Did you promote it elsewhere in advance of the free days?
thanks for the tips. This gives hope that anything is possible! Congratulations to everyone who posted and replied to this thread! Much success to all.
One question: do you think on free days that you should split it or have the free days back to back?
I think that having a few back to back may bring it up higher in the ranks, but it may only be temporary. Mine climbed into number 15 in children's books, so I'm sure that's why the hits kept growing. Obviously it dropped back down after the free promotion. The books that are consistently staying in the top fifty, and charging for it, must be making some serious money... Must be nice!
I'm still new and clueless to all this... I just have fun creating, so if it sells, it'll be a bonus.
Just because you didn't get any reviews doesn't mean that they won't eventually come. I've visited several facebook sites that deal with free books exclusively and people on there say they have their Kindles full of free books. I myself have several on my Kindle that have been on there for a couple of months and I've had no time to read them.
We all like to think that people will be eager to read our work after they download it for free, but that's not the way it goes. So take a deep breath, keep on writing and good luck with your promotions.
When I saw the title of your book... I just HAD to download it... because my own book (Willow Crossing) has a scene in it about missing socks and where they go. (I guess it's something everyone wonders about) I liked your book. It was really cute!
Thanks for the heads up, frewston! I agree. People tend to take free days for granted and after free days are over, they forget about you. Someone on this board mentioned that KDp should have a 100 limit on Free Days.
