Well a interesting business in the Bay Area is deconstruction of old houses and factories. Companies take pains to preserve the old wood. Some bought all the benches from the old Seals Stadium in San Francisco and used the wood to make tables.
Lots of redwood rafters, floor joist etc. in the old Bay Area buildings.
We had a giant redwood in our back garden, a present as a seedling to my dad when he was about 6. it was huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge (but a baby in redwood terms, about the size of a 3 storey house). it got condemned by the council (something to do with roots and drains...I hate bureaucracy) and the plan was to make something out of it. sadly redwood wood is apparently too brittle to be used in construction these days. I had to content myself with pinning a snotty little council official to the 6ft round stump with a particularly sharp redwood shard through his heart
