I really hope someone can help me. I have been trying to upload my book for 2 days and whilst I can get the text to appear as I want it I can't get the images to appear at all. If i save my word document as a web page I get a picture of a camera with an exclamation mark beside it and the text correct. If I save it as a word doc and then upload I get an image of a grey X on screen with the text correct. The only way I can get some semblance of the right pictures is if I save it as a PDF and upload. only then the formatting is way off and half the pictures are missing. it's driving me crazy. I have trie severaal fixes from the forums but I am losing patience. Someone PLEASE help me.
did you insert your pictures correctly in Word using the menu "insert" -> "picture" ?
if you copied and pasted your pictures into word, this could be the problem. What version of Word are you using? If you have a friend who has Word 2010, ask him/her to let you reformat your manuscript.
If you get the pictures to show when you save your file as a filtered webpage, you need to zip the html file AND the associated folder with pictures for uploading to KDP.
When you upload your zip file to KDP, do not use the "simple previewer" because it is known to not show pictures. Instead, download the .mobi file from the "enhanced previewer" and examine it in Kindle Previewer.
sometimes images have background images that show up instread of the picture you want!
on the webpage filtered thing.....
From Word.doc => Word.htm (Webpage, Filtered)
1) Open the Word.doc and do a Save As Webpage, Filtered, But direct the Save into a separate, empty File Folder.
NOTE: This folder should be created ahead of time, placed in a convenient place, and given a distinct name that is easy to find.
2) Word will issue a dire warning just ignore it and click the YES button!
3) After the save as, your open Word.doc will become Word.htm
4) Close it
5) Find the empty file folder (now it will have the Word.htm and a file of your images in it) send the entire file folder (Word.htm and Image folder) to a zipped file by right clicking it and selecting Send to ... Compressed (Zipped) File.
NOTE: This Zipped filefolder is what you upload to the KDP Bookshelf
The zipping ties the images to the Word.htm; otherwise, the Conversion engine will ignore them.
NOTE: If you do not have ==> ANY <== IMAGES AT ALL, You do not have to zip the Word.htm file
at the step 5, you can open the (YourFileName)image file and right click the area and select view and select thumbnails and view the thumbnails of the images
You can open each thumbnail with Paint and SaveAs the image as a JPEG
and close the image and move on to the next...
this will flatten the images and make them JPEGS if they were not already jpegs you may have to open the Word.DOC and re insert each image and make shure it is a JPEG one.
Kindle conversion can handle other image formats, but not all (i think TIFF is one that doesnt work(or is it PNG??)
THANK YOU I'm doing alot better now, I have all my pictures and I m lmost there h0wever the kindle previewer thinks that there is another picture at the start of my document. (there isn't) Again it shows a camera and a exclamation mark. if I could get rid of that I'd be set. Any ideas?
A simple solution would be to select the very beginning of your Word document plus the first paragraph. Cut and paste this stuff into Notepad (a simple program located in "Start" -> "Programs" -> "Accessories"). After that, select everything in Notepad and cut and paste it back into the beginning of your Word document. Correct the formatting of this paragraph in Word and save the document. Now do the conversion to html, upload to KDP, etc. you know the drill
I am having the exact same problem as original poster. I was so excited that someone was having the same problem and that it had already been solved, but then...
I have followed the steps that have been listed out in this Thread - going as far as to print them out and check them off after each step - but I keep coming up with the stupid little camera icon and not my actual image.
I have inserted the image, a .jpg, into the Word file. I have saved the Word file as a Web Page. I have created a folder in which to put that file. I have compressed the file. I opened that compressed file to make sure the document and image were there. I uploaded that compressed file to KDP, but when I preview it the camera continues to be there instead of my image.
I have checked the HTML (not that it made any sense) but I did see where there is a tag with "image" there.
Any other suggestions would be hugely appreciated.
