Book not selling well- advice PLEASE!

My first book, a Disney travel guide called Discover the Magic: The Ultimate Insider's Guide to Walt Disney World has been on KDP Select since May 31st. In that time, I've sold or loaned only 25 copies. I redesigned the cover a couple of days ago hoping that would help. So far, only 1 loan with the new cover.

The thing that really perplexes me is that I've been doing some advertising w/Adwords & Facebook that have resulted in lots of 'clicks': over 1,700 clicks on Google & 150 on FB. It seems that people are clicking through to the book and deciding not to buy. I'm trying to figure out why.

QUESTIONS (please help!)
1. Hoping to get some feedback on the new vs. old cover design. Please check out: http://www.disneyvacations4families.com/blog/discover-the-magic-of-disney-ebook-update/ to see both. I think the new cover is a big improvement, but so far that hasn't translated to sales. :(

2. If you were to click on the ad (meaning you must be at least mildly interested in a Disney travel planner) is there something on either the Amazon page (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0087OR36U/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=kookerkids-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0087OR36U) or my book promo page (http://www.disneyvacations4families.com/eBook/discover_disney_magic.htm) that would make you NOT want to buy?

Though I have no way to tell exactly who's buying and how they got there (another frustration), I would certainly expect that many clicks to result in a higher percentage of buyers. (The book is priced at $2.99.)

I'd really appreciate ANY feedback on any of this process, and any tips on improving the book's 'visibility'.

Thanks!
Roger

@Roger

Well, we could always try marketing our titles together. I have one that has never sold well. Guarantee that I know at least as much about Disney as you do. ;)

I don't think you're doing too bad, actually, especially since it's your first book. A lot of authors report just one or two sales their first month; some have said it takes two months before seeing a single sale. Keep doing what you're doing, and your sales will continue to grow.

Have you tried posting on Disney fan websites? Like ultimatedisney.com or Google "Disney forums" and "Disney fansites" and post a link to your book there (but don't sound spammy; most places have special threads for Disney books).

Not everyone who clicks will buy. I did a promo for my author fanpage on FaceBook- I got 48,000 clicks, but only 30 new "Likes." It takes a lot of traffic to get a sale.

Your cover looks fantastic, your TOC looks organized, and your intro is catching. The tone of what I read is casual and comfortable, which I think is perfect for this type of book. Maybe shorten your blurb a little bit? I don't know how often people click on the "read more" when blurbs are really long. Just a thought/friendly suggestion. :)

I clicked on the "Look Inside" and I don't know if it's my browser (I am using an old computer) but a couple of your images are coming up as blank squares with question marks in them. I see some photos, and they look great, but in your section about how busy the park is during certain times of the year ("Really Busy," "Busy," etc.) it's showing me blank boxes. You should check that on yours to be sure it's working (it seriously could just be my ancient computer, but you always want to double-check).

Keep your chin up, you're doing great! :)

Oh, also- your name is really small and hard to read on the thumbnail. You might want to make it a little bigger. (Maybe also do the same with the subtitle "The Ultimate Insider's Guide to Walt Disney World".)

On a more serious note, I prefer the new cover to the old one. Are you sure that Disney won't freak out though? I almost put a similar image on my cover, but I was told that it could turn into a major legal problem and chose not to.

I can't say why people aren't buying, but ... I do have a question about your new cover. Did you get permission from Disney to use the photo? And any photos inside, etc.? It's just that I've dealt with Disney permissions before, and they won't even answer a query for 6 months, and then are really really tough to get permission for anything from--their photos especially. Of course, the book in question wasn't a guide book, but all we had was a brief (fictional) paragraph mentioning their name once (in a positive way) and one image of that Cinderella castle, and we had to give up because we had to go to press before we could get permission.

I'm not saying at all that your photos aren't legal, and I am NOT a legal or permissions person, but I'm just checking. Obviously other guide books exist, including ones with photos.

How many sales were you expecting, incidentally? I mean, is there a big market for that sort of thing? I'd probably just check online and then grab a brochure, but that's me.

Hey, if this thread gets in to Disney trivia, my Mickey Mouse tattoo and I will take you both on! ;)

Granted, I am much more familiar with Disneyland; I live in Southern California and have never been to WDW.

Hi Roger :)

At a glance I'd say your newest cover is an improvement over the original. I'd suggest enlarging the font size for both the by-line and the author name. As it stands, in the thumbnail, it comes across as a brochure or booklet you might get for free from AAA or a travel agency.

Maybe tweak your blurb a bit? I'd skip the first two paragraphs and go straight to the third..."The Ultimate Insider will help you SAVE TIME AND MONEY...". You've got a few seconds to pique a browser, why not let them know right away that you have something they can't get anywhere else?

I sure hope not! The thought crossed my mind...I know I can't sell images of some of their stuff, but I doubt that everyone who puts a Disney image in a book about Disney gets their permission.

I think they should thank me! As much as I love Disney, I'm like a 'walking billboard' to anyone who brings up the subject! ;)

Lots of good ideas there- thanks!
 • I've done a bit of posting on forums, etc. bug probably not as much as I should. I don't want to appear to be 'spamming'.
 • I think the little blank boxes you're seeing are bullet points. Not sure why the preview shows them that way. The download version displays them correctly.
 • Good points about text size & blurb. Someone else mentioned that too. I'll be working on that next. :)

Thanks for the suggestions!!!

I figured I'd just sell a million copies in a couple of months, then retire! ;)

I really had no idea what to expect from sales. It's more the fact that so many are seeing it (from the ads) and so few are buying it that has me concerned. I wasn't sure about being in KDP Select, so I'm wondering if that's a factor. I've tried to work Kindle/Amazon/eBook verbiage into the ads so people don't think they're getting a print book for that price, but it's had to work so much info into the limited ad space.
I've tried to address some of that in my landing page (http://www.disneyvacations4families.com/eBook/discover_disney_magic.htm) but that is only seen by the FB 'clickers'. The Google ad page goes right to Amazon...

A million copies in just a couple months?? High hopes there... it usually takes about four months to get to the million mark. ;) lol
