The result could be unnecessary harassment of some aliens (for instance, a veteran, college student, or someone assisting with a criminal investigation) whom federal officials determine should not be removed.

If Justice Kennedy can mix up object and subject, so can you!

And White House spokespeople:

"The DADT repeal act was signed into law by the President, and certification and implementation will happen whomever serves as Secretary of Defense."

Did I miss page one of this thread? Where'd it go? Who took it? Is this another Kennedy cover-up?

**whomever serves as Secretary of Defense.**

Oh, that is lovely! Eat your heart out, Justice Kennedy!

I like the Dave Barry "Ask Mr. Language Person" guide to when to use "whom":

1) If you're British
2) If you're very angry. "And just whom is going to clean up after these weasels?"

Still, though, those mistakes bother me less than "between you and I." That just sets my teeth on edge.

I'll tell you, but you gotta ask it on your knees.

It's a kind of logical fallacy--something is made redundant in the phrasing. Sorry, I'm not explaining it well. But like a protester's sign that says (and sadly, this is real), "Fags are gay!" Or, "Fatal car crashes can kill you."

when you 'beg' a question, you are avoiding the question - not inviting an answer

Depends.

"Grammar is my forte"--it's pronounced like "fort." (Commonly mispronounced, but ... it comes from the French, and there's no é on the end.)

In music--"This passage is played piano to contrast with the forte," then pronounced "for-tay." That's Italian. È più forte di me.

Not that your questions are off-topic, or anything. ;)

Re "begs the question":

"There are dozens of grammar sites out there that complain about the use of this phrase in the sense of raises the question. All I’m going to say about it is that the last public figure to use begs the question correctly in a sentence was Richard Nixon. Everyone else should just stop saying it."
