Using Images found on Google

My fiance brought up a very good point. I was curious to know if using a picture (for either an image within the book or as a cover photo) would infringe on likeness rights. Would using a picture with a person in it be wrong? My fiance said that just because I found the picture on Google, doesn't automatically mean it could be used.

Thanks in advance.

Hiya,
I had the same problem. A few pictures I really liked were from google but the copyright holders wanted a lot of money to use them when I asked for rights.
I finally found a picture I loved and wrote to the photographer. \he gave me full rights and asked only for a copy of the book when it is published in paperback as payment.

Always better to ask first or it could result in legal action and that would be awful to have to go through.

Thank you! I love this one pic and want to use it for a cover photo. I left a comment on the website I found it on. Hope they get back to me and say yes! Many thanks!

Many thanks!

You're welcome, some do also say yes if you suggest you will accredit them within the book so you could also try that :)
Make sure you get authorisation either in writing or via email for the exact use you require (just to cover yourself)
fingers crossed for you :)

Oh good lord.

Get this book before you do anything else.

http://www.amazon.com/Copyright-Handbook-Every-Writer-Needs/dp/1413316174/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1341441796&sr=1-1&keywords=the+copyright+handbook

And DO NOT download anything from Google. And give your fiance a big reward for saving you from a massive lawsuit and other legal problems.

Ok, I just read further down and now I have to take my Oh Good Lord to an even higher level.

Just because you found the picture on someone's website does not mean that they are the legitimate copyright holder. For all you know, they plucked it from someone else. Sure, you can use it, not a problem, or sure you can use it for $20, that's terrific, because it might not even be theirs!

Get your photos from a reputable place like istockphotos.com or any of the many others in the Newbies Start Here thread. You'll know that they're legit, they indemnify that they really do have model releases, all that "legal" jazz.

And please, read the book and don't be so trusting and naive. This business is going to eat you two alive.

Here's a good site for you:

http://www.tineye.com

It's a reverse image search site. It will NOT find every image on the web. But it'll find some. That can help in tracing copyright owners.

I recently found a pic I really, really wanted to use. It was hard to trace the owner because so many people had it on their blogs and their tumblr sites and all that. But I finally did it--I found the photographer! So I emailed and asked about permission. He was very friendly and said he liked what my designer had mocked up as a book cover, etc., and so he'd like to help me, and was $1000 reasonable for ebook rights? Well, in a way, yes--it was reasonable in that his work was worth that. But it's also more than I can pay. So I thanked him, and I'm going with a stock image for $10 from istock.com.

Your fiancé is right--you can NOT just help yourself to whatever image you find on google (whether it has a person in it or not). Smart man--you should marry him!

yes everything you say is correct, couldn't agree more (except for the last part)... in my case I went directly to the actual photographer :)

I may be a newbie at this self-publishing thing, but please don't treat me like I'm a complete idiot. I am 36 and a college graduate! My book is on emotional abuse and I am a survivor. I am better at spotting things like that now. My goal is to try to make a little money....not spend spend spend on images from a stock website. I'll see what it has though.

Ok so if I go to Istockphoto.com.....these are all images I can use? Do I need permission for using these? I am asking in ernest you guys. Please don't jump down my throat for being "naive"....yes, I am new at this. I don't need people ripping me to shreads on here when all I'm doing is coming here seeking advice from those who may have more experience. Thanks.

Oh good grief! I looked on istockphotos and holy snap! They are asking WAY too much money for these "istock" credits. Are you kidding me??? How about providing something where I can get pics for free, or nearly free. Damn, the point is to MAKE money from these books I'm doing....not spending half my paycheck getting credits!

Haha one more thing. When I use TinEye, and it comes up with several results of the pic I want, what then?

A few bucks??? I don't consider $180 for 120 credits "a few bucks". Sorry. And I am VERY tough, thank you very much. My book on emotional abuse? In it, I describe literally fighting back with my ex. I'm 5'3" and he's 6'5"....I fought back because I couldn't take it. I also won awards for my writing! I am VERY tough. So please stop patronizing me. Thanks A LOT for your help. I will not be coming to these boards anymore. Thanks.

PS......I have over $1400 a month in bills (including child support). What kind of money do YOU make to invest "a few bucks" on these pics? HMM? And FYI, I have a wedding/'honeymoon to save up for, which is WHY I'm doing these books. I don't make a 6-figure income. You could be a little nicer to us "newbies", you know. Not turn us off to this venture. I know "customers" would potentially give a thumbs down kind of review. But seeing as how I've only sold ONE copy of the poetry book that I put on here, I don't have many customers right now. The other book I'm doing is a medical one on sclerosing hemangioma...something I was diagnosed with. I am going through PROPER channels because the doc who performed my surgery works for the military and I have to go through the military public affairs office in NY just to interview this doctor! So don't tell me i'm naive and can't do things properly. I was abused by my ex, I don't need it from the Kindle community.

As long as the picture is in the public domain, you are safe. Just google the subject matter plus public domain and click on images in the left sidebr.

example -- horse public domain

Don't let some of these people get to you. Half of them don't know what they re talking about anyway.
