Indentations show up in Fire, but not in regular-Kindle and iPad

I've formatted paragraphs using Styles, set the indentations to 0.5 and uploaded the Word file. I opened it in the previewer on my computer, and the indentations show up perfectly in Kindle Fire, Fire HD and Paperwhite. However, no indentations show up in Kindle, Kindle DX and iOS devices (iPad, iPhone).

I've tried to go back to the Word file and deleted the indents, so the indent is set to zero. I did this so Kindle could auto-indent for me, and the opposite happens: the indentations show up in Kindle, Kindle DX and iOS, but no indents show up in Fire and Paperwhite. The effect is the exact opposite of the previous scenario.

I find that if I indent the "style" , the style/indentation is recognized ONLY by Fire and Paperwhite, BUT not iOS and old kindle e-inks. However, if I do NOT indent at all, Kindle DX and iOS automatically indent new paragraphs.

Why is it an "either-or" scenario: Fire and Paperwhite act inversely as e-ink and iOS? That is, if Kindle Fire indents, iOS doesn't, and vice versa.

Any help would be appreciated.

You uploaded a Word file?

Word.Doc?

Word.DocX??

Word.htm???

Use the Word.doc format but do a save as Webpage Filtered:

(This Usually cures almost all Ills)

From Word.doc => Word.htm (Webpage, Filtered)

1) Open the Word.doc and do a Save As Webpage, Filtered, But direct the Save into a separate, empty File Folder.

NOTE: This folder should be created ahead of time, placed in a convenient place, and given a distinct name that is easy to find.

2) Word will issue a dire warning just ignore it and click the YES button!

3) After the save as, your open Word.doc will become Word.htm

4) Close it

5) Find the empty file folder (now, if you look inside the filew folder, it will have the Word.htm and a file of your images in it) send the entire file folder (Word.htm and Image folder) to a zipped file by right clicking it and selecting Send to ... Compressed (Zipped) File.

NOTE: This Zipped filefolder is what you upload to the KDP Bookshelf

The zipping ties the images to the Word.htm; otherwise, the Conversion engine will ignore them.

NOTE: If you do not have ==> ANY <== IMAGES AT ALL, You do not have to zip the Word.htm file

Here is a page on Mac stuff

https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/help?topicId=200735140

they mentioned Webpage filtered, but I don't think Mac Word has this

but other than this here is the Mac zip formula

Save as Webpage on mac (I still like creating the seperate folder ahead of time!

the KDP HELP lsits this as how to "ZIP file on mac

Now, to create the ZIP folder necessary for uploading to KDP:

1. Click on your HTML file to select it and while holding Shift also Click on the Folder with your images. Both files will now be selected.
2. Now let go of shift and while holding down the Control (CTRL) key, click on the HTML file 3. This will bring up a menu with options, with the word "Open" at the top. From the list, choose "Compress 2 Items"
3. This will create a ZIP file on your desktop that is automatically called "Archive.zip"

If you wish to send the book to either of the @...Kindle.com addresses you need to take the zipped file folder and stick it inside of ANOTHER empty file folder and ZIP IT A SECOND TIME!

This creates a DOUBLE ZIPPED or ZIP/ZIP folder that you attach to the email to the conversion service.

(Its a KINDLE thing :) )

I think this is the second post on the identical weird problem.

It's weird because the defaults are just the opposite: the old e-ink Kindles indent by default; the Fire uses block paragraphs by default. (That's why you get the opposite effect if you do nothing.) I control this by using a style sheet in html, but it should be fixable in Word as well. Heed JT's advice.

You might look for the other post. It shouldn't be too far down.

I just uploaded another book yesterday and the same thing happened to me. On my block formatting, Kindle indents and on my normal formatting with indents, kindle block formats it. This has never happened before and I have over 20 books published. ugh... I will try to save as a webpage filtered and see if that helps.

I'm having exactly the same problem!
So glad i'm not the only one... I was going insane trying to figure out what I was doing differently from the past.
I tried using Word and Open Office to format the file. Same result. Even followed step by step the Smashwords guide to formatting.
I noticed that if I run my document through my old KindleGen on my Mac, everything works fine... so it might be an interface problem and the actual books look OK on the devices.
Has anyone tried to see what happens on an actual e-reader? Or solved the problem? :)

Hi all

As a first-time KDP author I very much appreciate this thread, as I am finding it impossible to format my Word file so that the paragraph indents show on both the Kindle 3 ('old' Kindle) and the Kindle Fire. It seems to be the case of 'either/or'. Absence of formatted indents in the Word document produces or forces indented paragraphs on the Kindle 3, but produces no indents on Kindle Fire, at least according to the preview; on the other hand, the presence of formatted indents in the Word document produces indented paragraphs (I think) on Kindle Fire, but not on Kindle 3. I only have a Kindle 3, so remain uncertain about the appearance of actual downloaded text on the Kindle Fire.

Despite the kind responses above in this thread, I feel am no further than I was towards resolving this conflict, which seems to create a situation in which one has to choose whether one's work looks right on the Kindle 3, or the new range of Kindles.

I was hoping that someone at Amazon Kindle HQ might be working to sort out what seems like a 'backwards compatability' issue, but maybe not.... :(

Even so... Happy Christmas!

Hello,
I converted my .doc to html as JT suggested (using Open Office ... I'm on MAc) and it seems that it works almost ok on all devices previews, apart from the fact that on one of them it adds an empty line at the end of each paragraph... (Kindle Fire)... I think I can live with that for the time being.
On the kindleboard thread I see many others with the same problem. They also brought to my attention that the Look Inside previews for new submissions show no correct indents as well. ARGHH.
That may put off most of our potential customers. Merry Christmas. LOL.

I published a book this morning early. The Look Inside is now available, and the indents are as I specified them: no indent for first paragraph in a chapter or major section, short indent (0.5em) for paragraphs within those chapters or sections.

I use CSS and simple html, assembled into an epub with Sigil. If you have this difficulty, it's because you are uploading Word or Word's version of html, and it is flawed.

HI NotJohn I have a question for you: I uploaded my first book. A bit of a learning curve and wasn't expecting a lot of interest. I have had a few buyers though (Yay!) mostly friends (sort of Yay) and one of them kindly told me there are some problems in the android space. The problem (so far as I know) is with dashes - I should have used em dashes. It might be other things too. So here is my question:

Android phones and tablet sales are up. maybe half my sales have been to android device based kindle apps. If i make changes to the book file (as I plan to when I figure it out) will those with affected books be able so delete their copies and reload at no extra charge? I realise its not ike an app - you won't get a notification but at least I could put a note on my blurb advising them how to make a correction. Please advise,

No, the rule is that once you have bought a title you can only ever download that same version. If you email KDP (use the contact form at the bottom of this page) you can ask them to inform people that a new version is available. KDP makes this as painful as possible. It usually takes me two emails to get my own book "pushed" to my archives after a revision.

I think you must explain the extent of the revisions. I doubt an en dash is sufficient, but it might be.

I've never read a book on an Android app (well--other than the Fire; that's Android, isn't it?). Perhaps I should.

I see this problem too and I use html instead to work around it. Sigh.

I thought I would mention though, if you use html, there are other bugs to address...

For instance, make sure the html has no "color:black" tags in it, or you will destroy reader's ability to use the night color setting, white text on black background.

And your size tags may keep some devices from being able to display the text in the size they want.

Today I just tried to go back to uploading .doc format to escape the html issues and now I see I have to just pick my bug set, there is no clean solution either way.
