It strikes me that users new to KDP might like to know about one oddity of the "Reports" section.

If you offer a book for free, you will usually get many downloads and these will be reported in a BLUE graph. The problem is this is displayed on exactly the same scale as your "Paid Units". If (like me) you sell only a few copies of a given title in a week this means that the Blue graph will swamp out your "real" (ORANGE) sales. You simply won't see them and you will probably conclude there were none at all. The thing to do is to uncheck the little box alongside "Free Units Ordered (eBook)" - your orange sales will then be visible.

Sorry, if somebody has already suggested this. It foxed me for quite a while.

Question: Our eBook, Similar Transactions—A True Story, frequently shows up as Number One in True Crime>Evidence. In the past, there would be a BANNER showing the eBook being number one. We advertise the eBook on Amazon. Lately, even though the book ranks number one in its genré, the banner does not appear with the ad. I don't know whom to contact about this.

Herb--
I don't know a definitive answer to your question. But I would guess that Amazon has cut back on the number of categories that get the #1 banner (perhaps only the main category of True Crime, not the subcategories).

You can ask Amazon directly if you want to find out for sure. Use the Contact link at lower right. I'm trying to keep this thread from getting too long--all specific (to you) questions should either be directed to Amazon themselves or made the subject of a new thread.

Anyone else have VERIFIED sales missing from royalty report?

I know that I sold 5 books through amazon.com because I have all the order numbers from people. One order is missing from my royalty page and amazon.com reports that I've only sold 4.

All sales were at the end of October, over two days. I am signed into the right account, and I did not drop any minimum price. The royalty report says I sold 3 from amazon and 1 from Createspace. But I have verified order numbers that I sold 4 through amazon and 1 through createspace.

My question is: why is there no way for us to SEE ourselves how many sales there are? What is to stop amazon from saying "You sold 75 books!" when you really sold 100? How would we ever know? This is really just a matter of trusting amazon to TELL you how many books sold? Why don't they give us the actual info/chart? This is ripe for fraud.

I'm just an amateur author and the one book that is missing is only $1.75 royalty so it's not the money. It's the fact that I am starting already to not trust amazon and kindle and thinking of publishing my book somewhere else.

Unless they make the sales more transparent, I think it's better just to buy my own copies and sell them through my own website.

Anyone else have VERIFIED sales missing from their royalty report?

Are you talking about print books or ebooks? Ebook sales generally clear within a day or two (though a couple of days' delay is not uncommon). KDP-print books do not show as sold until they actually ship. So if you have a verified order as you say you do, then it's not a "sale" until it prints and ships. This often takes a few days. In any case, the month-to-date report is a much better source of information on completed sales.

It's also possible that what you consider a late-October sale is showing up in the Reports as a November sale, because of when the credit card charge cleared or when the order actually shipped.

Wait for a couple of days, and if you still don't see the sales on your dashboard, use the Contact link at lower right to ask KDP about it, giving them the info from the verified sales you have.

Doesn't matter when the book was sold, only when it was processed. End of October could easily be beginning of November. Fiddling with their software would cost more money than they could ever pilfer from your paltry pocket. If you don't trust Amazon, don't sell on Amazon. Same as any other business.

I published my first book on November 13, and there seems to be an inconsistency in my reports. The last ebook order was November 29, bringing my total paid ebooks on the graph report to fifteen. The month-to-date report for a November shows 11 paid and 2 free-promo. (I realize there may be a bit of lag time for the credit card processing.). Here is my question: I have not offered my book for free, nor have I enrolled in KDP select or KU. I have enrolled in Matchbook for a discount of $2.99. (My paperback in on Create Space, not KDP.). Why would there be books listed under “free-promo”? Are these Matchbook orders? If so, will I receive a royalty based on the discounted price?

Thank you for your consideration.

Several people have reported something similar this week. There's a glitch where one or two (or three or more) sales may erroneously appear on the reports as free giveaways, even though the person wasn't giving away free books. Others report that they contacted KDP about it (Contact link at lower right), and KDP was all apologetic, re-characterized the books as sales, and reassured the people that they would indeed get their royalties. They are fixing the glitch for everybody , but you might contact them yourself, just to be sure. The kind of specificity you gave me will be what they need. Good luck!

In answer to you questions scroll down:
Wait and see.
No.
So…!
That is amazon.
amazon is not interested in you, or your books, the interest lies in how much cash they can receive from their Pages Read Scam.
I’ve sold a book, a short story and my royalties were $2.70.
If I was in the ‘Scam’ and all 55 pages were read, how much would amazon pay me?

Some misguided authors here, you know the type- 'My book sales are fantastic blah, blah, blah;' are under the impression that this $19,700,000 is shared between all the authors in the ‘scam’. They seem to forget they are paid for each page read a certain sum, a mere pittance.

Book sales are dropping, not only that, the amount of returns (has always outnumbered the confirmed sales) is rising. Amazon has to rely on the ‘pages read scam’ to make any money at all … this scam was started to offset the loss from return sales.

But, to all you authors with return sales, don’t cry; at least somebody waded through the quagmire of books on sale and picked yours. Lucky you, but then again your book is one of the 89% on the giant e-book slush pile called amazon.

Is that your personal experience? I have yet to get a return (knock on wood they stay away from me!)

I wouldn't pay more than 99c for a 55 page 'book', and I imagine I'm not the only one that wound shun a $3.99 book that is under 100 pages. But if it was enrolled in KU, I might borrow it despite the short length.

If I look at the royalties of a $0.99 book vs $3.99 book and give them more appropriate page counts to go with the pricing, I get: (using US dollars and 0.00455 KENP conversion)

55 KENP pages = 0.25
0.99 = 0.35

494 KENP = 2.24 (102k word novel)
3.99 = 2.70

As you can see, the pricing is fairly comparable to what you get for an outright purchase. I don't count that as a mere pittance. Enrolling in KU can become a significant chunk of your earnings.
