Hi, I AM new here. Published a book this month (THE WAR WITHIN by Marcus Rodham Perry), no sales since then. I tried to promote in some websites, tried a Kindle countdown... Even tried a free promo and got a hundred download, but nothing since then. I know some folks are looking my book, otherwise they would not download on first place, but still,, what you people thing? Maybe is the cover, or the synopsis? Ideas?

Hi, I read the inside. not my kind of story but I found it worked fine. Also I liked the simple book cover, it reminded me of movie posters of the 70s. This seems like a book teens would eat up, so maybe target them. Just an idea.

Reading the replies to these type of questions reminds me of what Blondie said to Tuco "You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: those with loaded guns ... and those who dig ..

You'll get a pat on the back and encouragement from kind souls. then if you're lucky the guys with loaded guns will tell you the truth - LISTEN TO THEM

I thought the cover was powerful with a blurb to match.

I released my latest in December and I'm only just seeing results, so maybe you're too hasty?

You could change your tags (I change my every so often regardless), use Fiverr for cheap promos, Google 'Book Bloggers' and ask if they'll feature you in return for writing something for them (guest post). Otherwise don't stress about it because if it's good readers will find you.

I've shared it btw.

Good luck!

Looking at the subject matter, you have a very niche topic (History: Battle for Leningrad). Honestly there are a lot of other books out there on the topic - some of them written by the people who were there, and not that many people (relatively speaking) are WWII history buffs. This is seriously dry reading for anyone not really, really, into history during this time.

Next is your Kindle sales price. Your price is through the roof for a Kindle book. If you open up the three categories your book is listed in, you will see that for the first 20 books in each category, your book is far more expensive.

Next, you have no Bio. You are presenting a book based on actual history, yet you give no information on your qualifications to even discuss the matter. The people interested in this topic are history buffs who expect what they read to have been written by someone with qualifications. I assume you have them, you need to present them in your bio.

What I can't see?
Do you have an advertising campaign set up on Amazon.com? My book is SciFi Fantasy, so it is not a direct comparison, but I will tell you, if I was not advertising my book using Amazon.com's advertising campaign features, I would not be selling much of anything (I've sold over 800 books since April 22 (including KU pages read)). Do some research and put together a list of likely search terms someone would use to look for a book on your topic AND put together a list of search terms someone would use for other books, authors, and titles related to WWII history (or history in general) on the assumption that a person interested in similar, or associated topics, would be interested in your book. I suggest you keep the two lists separate in different advertising campaigns so you can manage the word list better.

Is your book listed on GoodReads.com and other fan sites for your subject matter?

I think you have an uphill battle for getting a large number of sales, BUT, you can do a lot to help yourself if you fix the above. Make sure you dig through all the information Amazon.com provides to help you as well as doing some Google searches for how to advertise your book when its on Amazon.com.

Oh, and never give away your book. You get zero credit for it in the rankings, and you just gave it away to a host of potential people who were interested enough they may have been willing to buy it. You don't get those people back. At a minimum, price it at $0.99 as at least at this price you will get rankings credit.

Best of Luck,

Write the next book. Readers will often wait until a new writer has finished a series before they'll take a chance.

Honestly, it's not going to be a quick job to sell books. You have to work hard, in a genre with good readers, and promote properly. You said you tried to promote on some websites, but were they the right places? Most sites don't want people spamming their books. Readers are tired of it as well. Research and learn places where you can run promotions.

But mostly, write the next book. Then the next, and the next, and the next. One book wonders do happen, but they are rare and nothing to base a career on. And good grief, you aren't even a month into this.

Thanks for the tips, bro. I did not understand the biography part, however - I mean, I have one, it appears in the "About or Author" section, just below. Is not it?

Most new unknown authors don't sell any books apart from a few to family or friends but your best chance of selling anything is during the first few days when it's listed among the new releases. The most counterproductive thing any new author can do therefore is to give their book away for free during this period because whilst it's free, it isn't rising through the rankings and anybody who might have bought it can have it for nothing. Free has, in the past, been useful as a taster for a series but even that doesn't work anymore because free is now associated with worthless. As a reader, I no longer download free books . If I'm looking for a bargain, I search among the special offers.

I don't think your experience is uncommon. It takes quite a push to make any random person out there purchase your book. My suggestion would be to start by looking at the text on your cover which is a tad amateurish and your opening scene (IMHO it is dull an has technical issues).

Market is overcrowded, OP.

There's more authors than there's readers.

I published a book six months ago and didn't sell a single copy. I even received a negative fake review from some guy who didn't read it.

Better thing to do is just drop it and write only for yourself. We live in dark times.

Perhaps you are right and there are more authors than readers but I personally read one to three books a week but I can only write one to two books a year. If this is more or less average, the amount of books required to satisfy readers will always outnumber the amount of people writing books. I think I just confused myself with that sentence but hopefully, you'll know what I mean.

One thing I noticed is your genre. Your cover doesn't evoke scifi, it evokes action/adventure. Might want to change the category listing so when people browse the newly released lists (they only last 30 days) they're more likely to take a look. I would not list it as scifi at all. Second category would be War/Military. I would try this IMMEDIATELY while you still have days on the newly released lists and the pre-order lists(same list actually). Change the categories on all 3 books.

Most people don't have time to read three books a week. They have to work.

Now look at the volume produced. It's hundreds books released every week. How someone will notice your book in the middle of that pile?

It's the same effect as to send stories to publishing houses, your story will be along dozens, in a big pile for the editors to read.

Amazon (and others) just shortened that path, but is still the same principle.
