What do you all think of Amazon selling used copies of your books with no royalty payment being paid?
This has been brought to my attention recently.

I feel about it the same way I feel about used bookstores in general: Amazon selling used copies of my books doesn't bother me in the least. I get a royalty for the first sale of my physical or electronic books, so I'm happy.

I think there have been secondhand books for almost as long as there have been books, and that you were paid a royalty to begin with so you aren't being cheated.

If you're talking about "used" copies being sold by parasite marketers, be aware that any POD book is considered "used" in the industry. Should any of those marketers actually get an order for your book, they'd have to order it, or have it drop-shipped, and you'd still get your royalty.

I feel happy that someone bought my book, I got paid a royalty, and now they're able to resell it just like anyone else going by the first sale doctrine. This will explain it: http://www.indiesunlimited.com/2017/06/20/help-someone-else-is-selling-my-book/

Given that people have the right to sell used goods, I accept that Amazon gives them a platform to do so.

Not if your book is published by create space.
Amazon can sell your books as used and you don't get a royalty.
If you take your book off the market they can still sell it and you don't get paid.

Jakers, I think you're confusing "used" with "used." A brand-new POD book is, in the industry, considered "used." It's terminology. Pejorative terminology, yes, but that's just the way it is (at the moment).

For a true used book re-sale, you are correct in that the author does not get subsequent royalties. But if I re-sell my car, should I have to send a kickback to the manufacturer or the authorized dealership?

You get a royalty when a copy is initially sold. Half Price books doesn't pay a royalty on used books and neither does Amazon.

Most of the time, it's not Amazon that's doing the selling. I sell some of my used books on Amazon from time to time and the original author doesn't get any royalties from those sales. And Amazon only takes their percentage for the sale of used books, but those are not considered royalties. They are considered fees, just as with any other consignment platform for selling.

If a used book is being sold, you got paid when it was first purchased new (or at least what counts as new for print-on-demand). Unless, of course, you sent out paperback review copies that could be sold by the recipient, or you have remaindered copies floating around out there.

Amazon does not sell used copies of our books. Those listings are by Marketplace sellers (I am a Marketplace seller). They probably don't have a copy of your book. If someone orders one, they either cancel the transaction or buy a copy from CreateSpace at their wholesale discount and ship it to you. Less likely, they have an actual used copy that they are re-selling, which is everyone's right.

Good luck! -- NJ

I'm kind of amazed at how often this comes up. Somewhere out there, on some discussion board or other, someone has whipped people into a frenzy believing Amazon is somehow ripping them off because there are used books for sale.

You always get the royalty from the first time a specific copy of a paperback book is sold, no matter which sales channel is used.

You have misunderstood a SoA post, I suspect this one: http://www.societyofauthors.org/News/News/2017/May/Amazon-buy-button-change
