I had an expensive promotion Friday. Well, guess what, Amazon dropped the book out of all it genres. Sweet. I think they should pay for the promo.

If you got no results from the promo, then you should contact the service and explain what happened. Most have some sort of refund policy.

All the genres were removed? Did your book have a rank? Does it still have a rank?

It had a rank of 3000 during promo. A week later it was still at 14-15000. Yet the book never surfaced above 2000 books down. Or at least that's where they were eventually. My books are always above the top 5%. Never lower.

It sounds like you did indeed sell books, so you won't have a complaint to the company doing the promotion.

I hope you realize that with something like 6 million ebooks on Amazon, any ranking better than 300k is in the top 5%. A rank of 3000 puts you in the top .05% of all Kindle ebooks.

I still don't know what you mean by losing your genres. Does the book still have, at the bottom of the product page, your ranking in different categories?

losing your genres

Rankings in sub-categories? Number 242 in books about animals > pets > hamsters, something like that?

I often had ranks in the neighborhood of 2,500. Now I'm grateful if I can stay under 100,000.

Good luck! -- NJ

Hm. If it's indeed rankings in subcategories, and not actually being dropped out of the categories themselves, I believe this happens often when books are on promo. It seems to come in and out, likely as the system is updating. No big deal, business as usual. No refund to be had.

I often have books ranking up in the top 30 and above in some small and even larger subcats. I don't pay much attention to it, because in some it's really easy to get a great rank with few sales or borrows. (It's why people will get their books into these cats on purpose, so they can rank high for the bragging rights.) The only rank I pay any attention to is the one for the entire store. Being high up on that usually means something.

A ebook of mine reached #1 in Hispanic American last fall at amazon. It hit the top spot 3 times in all. Two stays were very brief but the longest was about a week, a little more. The main character in my story was Hispanic, the story was set in Latin America, and there was no character of significance in the story that wasn't Hispanic. Personally I am not Hispanic.

A hispanic author wrote a book called 'The German Girl' which eventually toppled me from #1. Curious thing is, the author is Hispanic but the story's character isn't. If you're wondering, the book's publisher is Simon and Schuster.

How many sales a day at Amazon.com did it take my ebook to reach #1? I think my high was in the low 20s.

I put my ebooks in categories that are appropriate. My books have been in Sports, Hispanic, Lesbian, Private Detective, Jewish, Interracial, Asian American, African American, War & Military, Romance, Science Fiction, Humor, Action & Adventure, and Erotica on two occasions and a few other categories. All of my ebooks have a Sci-fi or Magic or Fantasy element to them.
