I recently put a book, a children's book on KDP. I don't have the funds to promote my book as of yet. Will I still get paid without promotion of the book. Or after I start promoting it.

You get paid when you sell books, according to the terms of the royalty agreement you selected at publishing. Whether you promote it or not is up to you.

Most books, of course, don't sell without some form of promotion. Actually, most self-published books don't sell much, anyway. And, unfortunately, children's books are extremely difficult to sell on KDP.

There are tons of free or low cost ways to promote:
Facebook - there are book promo groups; genre groups; set up a page for your books or self as author.
Google plus - as above
Blogging - do you have a blog - blog about your book, writing, kids issues, whatever to build a following
Interviews - loads of bloggers run author interviews (me for a start), or spotlights or whatever. Others charge a small fee but offer a big social media reach, or fancy promo
Twitter - tweet your book, retweet, etc.
Linked in (not sure about this one - I have it and I'm in two minds how successful it is)
Goodreads - get your book on GR - some groups let you promote (be very careful to read the group rules). Again a good place to look for promo opportunities.
Giveaways - again the jury is out on whether this is useful - seems to work for some. Obviously you need to actually give away your book. If you're in Kindle Select you can have 5 free days a month. if you're not look at Goodreads, or various other sites that allow this.

You don't get paid until you sell copies. With a kiddie book, that may be a long wait. As a rule, it's a genre that doesn't sell well in e-format no matter what you do. Paid promotion for an unpopular genre may be flinging money into a sinkhole, but there are free and inexpensive options around. Research Marketing on the main forum page for ideas. No one idea works well for all.

Johnny, there are people on this board that make a practice of discouraging new writers. Do yourself a favor and dismiss them as the evil hacks they are. Please charge on. The world needs to hear your words - they are import to us all.

My given name is Starlight Tucker. I'm 20 years old and a passionate author with many projects in progress. I haven't gotten very far in marketing, but joining new social networks has helped. Psychological and academic struggles in underage students could be prevented by emphasizing strategies for self management in educational literature. For children, this project will moralize and inform about psychological, professional, and organizational skills in a creative way.

My first novel is titled The Trouble With Dreamers: A man in 2135 becomes locked in a distorted mental state of life and love far before he existed. In the twenty second century, humans control technology with their minds using a multipurpose device called the corneal implant (C.I.). After experiencing malfunctions, Landon Brauns is sent to Brain Analyzation, a company that studies an individual's thoughts and dreams to correct mental instability. Landon forgets his own life, replacing it with delusions of a romance between his young self and a woman who lived a century prior.

You are wrong. There are people on this forum, experienced writers, who are trying to explain to newcomers that self-publishing is not the easy road to success as their inexperience leads them to imagine. Good advice on how you have to write skillfully and professionally, as well as prepare good covers, blurb and promotion are often dismissed by those who, in their ignorance, consider themselves superior and will not consider they have much to learn. Far from being evil, it is a force for good that is trying to help them. But I expect this to fall on stony ground.
