Hi,
I spoke with someone at KDP a while a go, but was wondering if here is anyway as an author / publisher we can find out how many "samples" of the book have been downloaded? This could be important information for how many people are interested in the book, but not ready to buy yet.
Thanks so much,
LJ Evans

No, we don't have access to that information.

I'm curious as to what information you think you can glean from the # of sample downloads that you couldn't get from looking at your rank(s).

If 1,000 people downloaded the sample but nobody bought the book, that might indicate the author should improve the book. You wouldn't be able to tell that just from the ranking, though.

Actually, I suspect that very few people bother downloading a sample anyway, when the Look Inside is much more convenient.

It's been at least a year since I have, and that was only to see if the text were really ragged right as shown in the Look Inside. I think Amazon has since fixed that glitch, where a book uploaded as a Word doc could display as ragged right even if the text were justified.

Now? You're right. There's really no reason, except where a person has ordered a print edition and gets the ebook sample so he can start reading right away.

I don't know about other apps, but in the "Bookstore" on my Fire, there is no Look Inside, only the option to download a sample.

I shop from the browser specifically so I don't have to delete hundreds of samples I can tell I don't want before the end of the first page, but others are app-centric and may never visit the web site to behold all its bells and whistles.

That's a good point. The Kindle app for iOS also lacks a Look Inside, but I rarely shop from the bookstore feature.

Thanks for the quick reply that the data isn't available NJ!

I know myself and lots of my associates download samples to try a fiction book instead of spending money on a book we won't like. It typically has more pages than the look inside and is easily downloaded to kindle ap or kindle itself. Plus, if you buy the book, it automatically deletes the sample for you. It's a great way to keep track of "To Read" books without buying the book up front. Its like a To Read Shelf in Goodreads almost.

The sample is exactly the same as the Look Inside, but it does allow you to see if the bad formatting revealed in the Look Inside was suppressed during for for Kindle display.

It's so easy to buy a book by accident from a Kindle (and I assume from a Fire tablet) that I long ago gave that up as a bad job. I only go shopping from my computer, where I can control everything, including my log-in information.

I suspect that many if not most refunds are accidental purchases.

But perhaps Amazon has now cleaned up its act. I've noticed that refunds have almost vanished this summer. (I have none for August so far.)

Good luck! -- NJ
