Amazon Ads Question

Hi!

I'm having problems getting ads accepted by Amazon marketing Services. My ads keep getting rejected for "- The ad contains inappropriate capitalization." I've read and re-read the guidelines and can't figure out what the problem is. Amazon customer support has been of absolutely no help (surprise!). Below is the ad that I was trying to run. Any thoughts are appreciated. The only thing I could see to try is capitalizing the 1st letter of the headline only, but I've run dozens of ads previously that were accepted with each word in the headline being uppercase.

Headline: Fugitive Orphan Hunted by Mercenaries and Monsters

Main Body: Can the fugitive orphan Jetsam escape from a legendary bounty hunter, dishonorable adventurers, and an enigmatic dragon? An epic fantasy thrill ride!

The guidelines changed (got a lot stricter) in May 2017. There should be a link in the rejection e-mail to download the PDF of the new guidelines.

One of the points I saw in the guidelines for the ad copy stated: "Does not use overly forceful phrases or exclamation points." That could be what's tripping you up. Another referred to custom text (whatever that means) being in sentence case (not title case).

And yes, it's complete guesswork. The ad reps just spit out canned phrases for rejection, which often have nothing to do with the real reason.

If it's inappropriate capitalization they're claiming, the bots probably didn't recognize Jetsam as a name. I would try leaving it out: "Can a fugitive orphan escape from..." and see what happens. I've been dinged twice. Once because I typed NEW! You can't use all caps for anything, apparently. The second time was because I said the book was free. The bots said there was no guarantee it would still be free when the ad ran. Well, it's permafree, but that's a whole 'nother thing. These bots are so picky.

Good luck!

Thanks!

I did pull "Jetsam" from the ad than that one got rejected, too! In my latest attempt, I removed "An epic fantasy thrill ride!" and also made the headline first-word uppercase only. We'll see how that one goes.

And I have the latest guidelines, too. Maybe I'll give them another read.

If it wasn't so frustrating, it'd be funny.

I'll just keep trying, trimming words until all I have left is "Book" ;-)

LOL. Yeah, it's very frustrating, isn't it? Especially when you have to wait a day or so for them to not approve it. And then you get to start over. And wait a day for them to...

Ahem. Good luck! Keep us posted on which magical word combination finally works!

Yup. I've recently complained about that, AGAIN.

I mean, think about it--that "Rejected" status is totally useless. Why not just drop a rejected ad's status back to "Draft"? Then the author could either fix the ad or delete it. Duh.

BTW, Amazon must be running the KDP forums off the Kaypro again. Man, response has been S-L-O-W ...

It almost alway is, for me. Maybe my expectations are too high :)

Edit: Actually, now that I think about it, it's been fairly decent today. Pages load in 5 seconds as opposed to 15+ or timing out completely. Maybe we're at opposite ends of the load-balancing equation.

Well, I have an update. In typical Amazon fashion, I'm still as confused as I was before.

So, the two ads that got rejected for "inappropriate capitalization" were just approved today, even though I didn't change anything and actually deleted them after they were rejected.

No e-mail or explanation from Amazon. I'm assuming the e-mail I sent asking for an explanation of the reason for rejection may have had something to do with it, but I'm only guessing.

So, I guess after all "Jetsam" and "YA" are acceptable words to capitalize (the Amazon guide even mentions YA specifically as being acceptable).

Moral of the story? Just keep throwing spaghetti on the wall till something sticks...?

You were able to delete a "Rejected" campaign? HOW? Prithee, tell us lesser beings how you were able to do that! :)

I have that option on my Advertising Campaigns dashboard. The rejected ones show up at the top, and I can edit or delete them.

Maybe Amazon has updated the interface recently? I've only been doing ads since June '17, so I'm a newb.

I'd post a screenshot, but I currently don't have any rejected ones.

It's been my experience that once an ad is rejected, it will keep getting rejected, no matter what changes you make. So I just delete them and start over.

Hmmm. Well, maybe the option is only there for newer rejected campaigns ...

Lucky you. My mark of shame is still there, with no option to delete.

Possibly. This is September, after all. It may take a while for the new interface to roll out.

Well, gosh, this has been an educational experience. I heard back from Amazon via e-mail (after they reactivated my rejected and deleted ads). I've copied the correspondence below. A bit of a head-scratcher:

"I'm writing to follow up regarding your concern about the rejected ad campaigns.

I'd reached out to our Marketing Services team regarding this and they've informed that the ads were rejected because of the headline not being in sentence case.

We recommend you to create future campaigns with headline and custom text in sentence case. "

My main problem with this answer is that the example text included on the ad creation page is in violation of this policy. The example headline text provided by Amazon (i.e., 'The Ultimate Collection of the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes') is not in sentence case, and suggests that a headline with uppercase first words would be acceptable. Ideally, this example text would be in sentence case (or removed entirely and left blank), so as not to be misleading and inaccurate.

And just to clarify, Amazon's April 2017 Book Ads Creative Acceptance Policies states that "Custom Text must be in sentence case" but does not state that this applies to Headline or Title text.

Oh well...
