Do you mean ebook or print? I'm assuming print.

At the moment, if you published a print book through KDP, there is no way to order author copies. However, Amazon announced yesterday that they are planning to start having author copies available in the next couple of weeks, so watch for announcements. If you published through CreateSpace rather than KDP-print, then you just order author copies from your dashboard.

Note that "author copies" are not free. You are charged for printing (a few dollars for most books) plus shipping.

If you mean ebooks, authors do not get free author copies of ebooks. However, you can buy your own copy and buy copies for others and get your royalties, radically reducing the cost.

Good luck!

If you are in KDP Print you cannot order author copies aside from placing a retail Amazon order yourself. It is one of the main downfalls and reasons to avoid KDP Print and use Createspace or (better yet) IngramSpark. The lack of author copies is one of the bigger issues with KDP print but only one in a slew of restrictions in place when compared to Createspace. The inability to bleed vector image, single color space, min font size, lack of proof copies etc all add up to making KDP Print grossly inferior to CS (which is already slightly inferior to Amazon's main competition Ingram). I've "borrowed" the image below from "Walton" on the CS forums. It does a decent job outlining the differences

Where did you see this announcement? Do you have a link you can post?

KDP announcements are posted on the main forum page, right hand column.

I see we can now order Author Copies. Has anyone tried to do this? The instructions I found are not working. I don't see the "Order Author Copies" under the ellipses menu.

Instructions:
Go to your Bookshelf and select the paperback you would like to order.
Click on the Order Author Copies link in the ellipsis ("...") menu.
Enter the order quantity and select the marketplace of your order from drop-down menu.
Click Proceed to Checkout. You’ll be redirected to the Amazon Shopping Cart of your chosen marketplace to complete your order.
Author copies are eligible for all paid standard and expedited shipping options available to Amazon customers (excluding Prime). Unlike retail customer orders, author copies can take up to 3 weeks to print. You can ship author copies to multiple shipping addresses by placing separate orders for each destination.

"Over the next few weeks ..."
I believe that is a euphemism for "if we can convince our boss ..."
which is itself a euphemism for "when hell freezes over ..."
Often wrong, I am hoping I continue my trend.

This option is only available when books are in draft and have not been published.

Actually in this case it means it means "several weeks ago".

"Author copies are copies of the live version of your paperback that you can order from Amazon." The KDP info further states these can be ordered at printing cost. As far as I've seen, the ellipsis does not even activate until one publishes, but perhaps that is just upon making changes.

What does it take to get an official response to this thread from the people at KDP? I need to order almost a 100 copies of my book to distribute for a charity so I need to save all the dollars I can...

You won't get one because threads are not monitored by KDP except for bots looking for "forbi*dden" words, or unless a thread is flagged for cause. If you published your print edition via KDP-Print, it appears there are still no author copies available except via retail sales, despite a long-awaited announcement that they were. Currently, at-cost copies are still only available to self-publishers who used the CreateSpace platform.

I read that the current work-around is to price the volume at the minimum price that the system will let you, wait for the price change to go through, and then order your copies as a customer. Then, after the copies have been billed to you, you can raise the price again.

Run the numbers and see what kind of expense you come up with. An order that big should qualify for free shipping, too (maybe?).

Either via Createspace or Amazon, you still have to pay the printer the costs. Neither Createspace nor Amazon give a hoot what you do with the books as long as they get their full due.

You can lower the price down to cost then raise the price back up. Since you went the KDP paperback route that price is up in the store for all who come upon it. If you had published through Createspace you wouldn't be putting that rock-bottom price out to the world. You could have made the purchase at cost and that would be that. BUT you'd be paying shipping on 100 books from Createspace, whereas buying on Amazon (I checked) you will get free shipping for purchases made over $25.00 (at least you will in the USA).

I have all my books on Createspace. If I had to buy a massive amount of books I do believe that I would buy them through Amazon then wait to get the difference back as a royalty.
