Barcode overlap issue

Uploaded my cover for my new POD book. Received this issue message from Amazon: "The barcode should not overlap text, other barcode boxes, or other important elements." My cover designer did insert a white box (following Kindle specs) on the back cover, and this is where the misalignment/overlap occurs. Question is: Can I upload a cover without the empty white box on the back cover? That way, the Amazon-inserted barcode box would not compete. Help...?

As with so many aspects of paperback publishing, you would not have this problem with CreateSpace, where if you use your own bar code, CS will not overprint it.

The usual place for the bar code is the lower right of the back cover, so don't put anything important there. But I wouldn't put a white space there, either, because with KDP Print's automagical system, you may not hit it precisely.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook.)

The empty white box is what it's overlapping. They need to be a little clearer on that. You need to leave space for the bar code, but you should just leave that part of the cover the same as the rest. They'll add both bar code and box. If you put the box there yourself, you'll get this error.

Don't put anything where the barcode should be. A professional book designer knowing which platform you're publishing on would have known better. It's right in the instructions from KDP-Print and CreateSpace.

As with a few things you note, KDP and Createsapce are in fact the same in this regard. Swapping to Createspace is not a panacea for all ills.

Sorry, but what instructional page are you looking at where it says do not add the white barcode box? This one https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201953020 does not indicate that there should be no white box. I gives the dimensions and placement of the barcode only.

I believe that is if you are supplying your own bar code.

Given that -- unlike CreateSpace -- there is no human eyeballing the result, I think it would be the height of folly to 1) put a bar code on the cover being uploaded or 2) leaving a white box there.

Yes, there really are differences between CS and KDP Print. One works, the other might, depending on what you throw at it. Anyone who has regularly been uploading PDFs to CreateSpace could probably upload the same PDFs to KDP Print and get equivalent results.

(But why would anyone in his or her right mind do that? Do they have a philosophical objection to having their books sold through Barnes & Noble and the Book Depository?)

We have learned it from experience. Any "element" in that space causes an error, including a white box. Amazon never tells you this but it is true

sigh They had already told not to cover up the barcode. Telling you exactly where it is and exactly how big it is lets you know exactly the space you need to leave clear. If you put a white box there, you haven't left it clear.

I had the same issue. I will remove the white box and see if that works. Thanks for the suggestion.

KDP gives the exact location and size of the barcode box so designers will know precisely where nothing should go. If you put anything there, the space is not clear for the placement of the barcode box.
