Are there any free PDF tools available that do it better?

Yes. It's called OpenOffice Writer. It will open your Word doc. I always go this way, finishing the writing in Word but the formatting and PDF-making in OOW.

And upload that perfect PDF to CreateSpace, not the buggy KDP Print.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook.)

Good luck! -- NJ

Great - thank you for the tip Notjohn. I will try to remember next time around and I might redo it this time around if it looks bad.
Muchos gracias,
Sherwyn.
