Help! Cancelled Pre-Order status and now I can't edit the content!

I cancelled the pre-order status of two books thinking I needed to do that to edit their content (yes, now I realize I just needed to do this a different way). But now my books are "locked" to editing and I can't do ANYTHING with either one. I have an email in to Amazon, but of course, it may take 24+ hours to get a response...and I've been waiting 24+ hours thinking maybe I just needed to wait, like we wait for books to go live. I really, really don't want to start from scratch--I've already been using the AISN numbers to connect books directly to my website and for marketing funnel info. If those change, it'll be a serious pain to go back and fix stuff! Any thoughts?

Don't know why your book is locked, but I'm sure it will unlock sooner or later, One thing I can tell you is to plan on losing your ability to run pre-orders for the next year.

Well dang it! And all I was trying to do is edit content! Sheesh! Maybe you know the answer to this sort-of related question: Is there an easy way to get an AISN assigned to a book you're creating without it having to reach published status first? It seems like the process is very circuitous if we need the AISN for the back end of the link that will lead people directly to a book page. I can even see having to load a cover...but content too, when some of that content will include links to books you're releasing at the same time? It's such a pain!

If you're releasing them on a pre-order, just upload the manuscript, giving yourself enough time to do updates.

Then once your book is approved and there is a product page in place, just go into your manuscripts and add the ASIN number. You can then upload the new version.

Allow at least 48 hours for the first upload and 24 hours for the second to be on the safe side.

However, you first have to convince Amazon that your removing your books from pre-order was a genuine mistake, and hope that they let you off with a slapped wrist.

If not, you'll be facing a ban of 12 months from listing pre-orders for upsetting A'zons customers.

Good luck. J

Well, it is what it is...it IS my first time doing any pre-orders, even though I was doing 3 at once. Thanks for the warning, though! I might have wondered what happened otherwise if I tried to do a different book as a preorder!

Did you actually have any copies ordered? If so, the zon will not be happy with you. If not, you just might get away with it.
It's worth a grovelling message using 'contact us' to try.

Good luck. J

Hmmm...I doubt it (that I had any orders). How would I know if I do? (yeah, kinda that clueless!)

Sheesh! LOL :)

Go to your reports page, and along the row that starts with Sales Dashboard, there's a tab with Pre-orders on it, about halfway.

Click on that and it will show all books you've ever put up for pre-order.

That will tell you how many sales you had lined up.

The only thing is, having never removed my books during the pre-order stage, I'm not sure whether the record would disappear.

Have a look and see. If you have had any, click on the + sign to the left of each book and that will give you a breakdown of number, site, and cancellations as well.

I think this would be one time when it would be Ok to hope for a big fat zero! If you haven't upset anybody, Amazon may not be so harsh.

I hope it all works out Ok.

Suggestion - next time you want to try something like this - check the community threads or ask the community first, maybe? You may get a bit of snark from the long-timers, but you won't land yourself in this mess again.

Best wishes. J

I don't understand how anyone running a pre-order (much less three) would never think to click the Pre-order tab at least once, if only to check they went through okay. I'm not sure "clueless" is the right word.
