I am a newbie. (Got that out of the way!)

My question is this, can you purchase your own book in print form at a bulk rate to promote it off of Amazon? I know we would eventually get the royalties we back to us, but I did not know if Amazon offers this to authors. It would be nice to have books in hand to show people or to give away or to even enter into contests, but it would also be nice to be able to purchase them discounted since we are the authors. Has anyone done this?

I am currently just on Amazon/Kindle exclusively as a learning experience about this whole self publishing thing. I would love to hear from those of you who have done this for awhile! Thanks!

The majority suggestion here is to do your paperback using CreateSpace dot com (another Amazon company). The only thing to watch out for on CreateSpace is DO NOT accept their invitation to do your e-book for you (one, you already have the e-book; two, it often comes out looking ugly). CreateSpace allows you to purchase author copies at cost plus shipping, though of course there'd be no royalties off that. With cost plus shipping for 10 copies, each of my paperbacks goes for around $3.

I'm assuming you're in the U.S. If you're outside the U.S., shipping costs may make it more economical to buy copies as an ordinary customer (for which you'd get royalties, of course).

Good news on that front...

‘Over the next few weeks, we are making updates that allow you to order proofs and author (wholesale) copies of your paperbacks on KDP.

Proofs allow you to review a physical copy of your draft paperback prior to publication. Learn more here.
Author copies are copies of the live version of your paperback that you can order from Amazon. Learn more here
When you order copies of your own book, you pay just the printing costs plus shipping and applicable taxes. Unlike CreateSpace, KDP proof and author copies for the UK and the rest of Europe are printed and shipped from within Europe.
By publishing a paperback on KDP, you can reach more readers through Amazon websites in the US and Europe, as well as manage your print and eBook publishing from one website. In addition, you can use the KDP website in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese or Dutch. Learn more here.

Actually, your KDP-Print book reaches a smaller audience, only US, Europe and Japan. No Canadian distribution, or to Mexico, Australia, etc.
