KDP Select FAQ

What is KDP Select?

KDP Select is an optional program for you to reach even more readers and gives you the opportunity to earn more money. If you choose to make a book exclusive to the Kindle Store, which is a requirement during your book's enrollment in KDP Select, the book will also be included in Kindle Unlimited (KU) and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library (KOLL). You can earn a share of the KDP Select Global Fund based on how many pages KU or KOLL customers read of your book (learn how payments are calculated). Currently, Kindle Unlimited is available to customers in Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.es, Amazon.fr, Amazon.it, Amazon.mx, Amazon.ca, Amazon.com.br, and Amazon.in. The Kindle Owners' Lending Library is available for readers in the following marketplaces: Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, and Amazon.co.jp. In addition, by choosing KDP Select, you will have access to a new set of promotional tools, including Kindle Countdown Deals (limited time promotional discounting for your book) and Free Book Promotion (readers worldwide can get your book free for a limited time). Authors and publishers can enroll a single title, their whole catalog or anything in between within KDP Select. By enrolling your book in KDP Select, you will also be eligible to earn 70% royalty for sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, India, and Mexico.

What is Kindle Unlimited?
Kindle Unlimited is a subscription service that lets customers read as many books as they like, and keep them as long as they want. Any customer can choose whether to subscribe to Kindle Unlimited. They don't have to be Amazon Prime members, but they do need to pay a subscription fee.

Pages Read

We’ll count all pages read by individual readers from the Start Reading Location (SRL) to the end of your book. Amazon typically sets SRL at chapter 1 so readers can start reading the core content of your book as soon as they open it.

Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC v1.0)

To determine a book’s page count in a way that works across genres and devices, we’ve developed the Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC). We calculate KENPC based on standard settings (e.g. font, line height, line spacing, etc.), and we use KENPC to measure the number of pages customers read in your book, starting with the SRL to the end of your book.

This standardized approach allows us to identify pages in a way that works across genres and devices. Non-text elements within books including images, charts and graphs count towards a book’s KENPC.

You can see your book’s KENPC listed on the “Promote and Advertise” page in your Bookshelf, and you can also see total pages read on your Sales Dashboard report. Because it's based on default settings, KENPC may vary from page counts listed on your Amazon detail page, which are derived from other sources.

What is the Kindle Owners' Lending Library?
With an Amazon Prime membership, Kindle owners can choose from thousands of books to read for free once a month, with no due dates. For more info, click here.

Why should I choose KDP Select?
1. Earn higher royalties – Earn your share of the KDP Select Global Fund when readers read your books from Kindle Unlimited and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library. The fund amount is variable and announced on a monthly basis. We constantly monitor all factors that impact the KDP Select fund in order to set the fund amount for our KDP Select authors. You can also earn 70% royalty for sales to customers in Japan, India, Brazil, and Mexico.

2. Maximize your book's sales potential – Choose from two promotional tools: Kindle Countdown Deals, time-bound promotional discounts for your book, available on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, while earning royalties; or Free Book Promotion, where readers can get your book free for a limited time.

3. Reach a new audience – Help readers discover your books by making them available through Kindle Unlimited and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library and reach the growing number of Amazon Prime customers in the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Mexico, Canada, and Japan.

If my books are distributed in Kindle Unlimited and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library, can customers still buy it?
Yes, your books will still be available for anyone to buy in the Kindle Store, like they've always been, and you will continue to earn royalties from those sales like you do today.

If my book is enrolled in KDP Select, can I still send copies of my book to proofreading and editing reviewers?
We do allow publishers to provide professional reviewers with a copy of the book by email for the purpose of editing, proofreading and helping with other quality improvements.

What does it mean to publish exclusively on Kindle?
When you choose KDP Select for a book, you're committing to make the digital format of that book available exclusively through KDP during the entirety of its enrollment in the program.
All content made exclusive to Amazon in KDP Select must remain for sale on our site only; it cannot be available for free or for purchase in digital format anywhere else, including publishing the content of your book on the web, including on your own website, blog, etc. However, you may choose to make up to 10% of your book available on other sites as a sample, as well as continue to distribute your book in physical format (including print on demand books), or in any format other than digital. See the KDP Select Terms and Conditions for more information.

If my book appears to be available for sale or distribution on another website, is it eligible for KDP Select?
No. If the digital format of your book is marketed in a way that indicates it is available for distribution elsewhere, for sale or for free, then it is not eligible for KDP Select. However, you can still sell it in the Kindle Store. One possible indicator that the book is available for distribution may be the presence of instructions on another website or sales channel for downloading or obtaining the book.

Can I re-enroll my book in KDP Select if it was removed previously due to violation of the exclusivity requirements?
Yes, you can. Once you ensure that your book is not available elsewhere in digital format, it is eligible for re-enrollment.

I gave a third party the right to distribute my book through other websites, and my book continues to be available through that third party on another website. Can I enroll it in KDP Select?
No. If you gave a third party the right to distribute the digital format of your book and it is available through that third party on another website, you cannot enroll it in KDP Select.

What kinds of books are eligible to enroll in KDP Select?
Check the eligibility information.

Where can I see the terms and conditions of KDP Select?
Click to see KDP Select Terms and Conditions.

Are there any other opportunities for KDP Select books and authors to be promoted?
Yes, KDP may publicly announce the top digital books read through the program, including the author, publisher, number of times customers read them, and KDP Select fund royalties earned.

How do I earn 70% royalty for sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, India, and Mexico?
Your title must be enrolled in KDP Select and meet list price requirements in order to be eligible to earn 70% royalty for sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, India, and Mexico. If your book is not enrolled in KDP Select or does not meet list price requirements, you will earn 35% royalty.

Eligibility

What books are eligible to be enrolled in KDP Select? Are any authors or publishers excluded?
Most books can be enrolled in KDP Select. The only books that cannot be enrolled are those for which you do not have exclusive rights for the primary content of the book (i.e., this content is in the public domain or others may also have the right to publish this content). Other factors, including royalty option, price, genre, etc., do not impact a book's eligibility. If you have questions about your book's exclusion from KDP Select, please write to KDP Support by clicking "Contact Us" at the bottom of the page.

All authors and publishers, regardless of where they live, are eligible to enroll their books in KDP Select. Books with rights to be sold in marketplaces where the Kindle Owners' Lending Library is available will automatically be included in the relevant libraries upon enrollment.

Can I add some new content (e.g. bonus chapter, author's commentary, etc.) to a book that I offer on another platform to make my book exclusive and eligible for KDP Select?

No. You can't enroll your book in KDP Select by simply adding a bonus chapter, author's commentary section, etc. to a book that is available elsewhere. See the KDP Select Terms and Conditions for more details.

Enrollment

Do I have to enroll all my titles in KDP Select? Is there a limitation on the number of titles to enroll?
No. KDP Select is an optional program. If you choose to take advantage of KDP Select, you can enroll a single title, your whole catalog, or anything in between. Titles that are not enrolled in KDP Select do not have to be exclusive to Kindle.

How do I enroll my titles in KDP Select? When does enrollment become effective?
There are two ways to sign up:
a) You can enroll existing titles from the Bookshelf by clicking on the ellipsis button ("...") under the Book Actions menu next to the book you want to enroll. Select "Enroll in KDP Select." From there, check the box "Enroll this book in KDP Select" and continue publishing your book.
b) You can enroll new titles from the book details page. Simply check the box "Enroll this book in KDP Select" and continue publishing your book.
Enrollment is effective immediately for titles already live in the Kindle Store. Enrollment for new titles goes into effect once the book is available for sale on our website.

Can I enroll my book in KDP Select without participating in Kindle Unlimited and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library or vice-versa?
No. Only books enrolled in KDP Select are eligible to be included in Kindle Unlimited and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library. All KDP Select-enrolled books with the necessary rights for the territories included will be automatically included in Kindle Unlimited and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

For those books enrolled in KDP Select, can I change the metadata (e.g. Royalty option, book description, etc.)?
Yes, you can change all of the metadata of a KDP Select-enrolled book. From example, KDP Select is available for books in both the 70% and 35% royalty options. You can switch a KDP Select-enrolled book's royalty option without impacting its enrollment in KDP Select.

Can I unpublish my KDP Select-enrolled titles and re-publish them on KDP later?
Yes.

Tell me more about unpublishing titles enrolled in KDP Select.
You can unpublish KDP Select-enrolled titles at any time during the term. Once you unpublish a title, it is no longer required to comply with KDP Select terms and conditions, but your commitment to the KDP Select terms, including exclusivity, will resume if you make the title available for sale again in the Kindle Store.

Renewal and Cancellation
How do I renew my book's enrollment in KDP Select? What if I don't want to renew?
For your convenience, every KDP Select-enrolled title will be automatically renewed for another 90 days unless you opt not to automatically renew.

If you don't want to renew, go to your Bookshelf at any time and click on the ellipsis button ("…") under the Book Actions menu next to your book, then select "Edit Details." Uncheck the box next to "Automatically renew this book’s enrollment in KDP Select for another 90 days." Cancelling automatic renewal does not affect the book's enrollment in KDP Select for the current term.

How do I cancel my book's enrollment from KDP Select?
Once your book's term in KDP Select begins, you will have 3 days to cancel. To do so, simply go to the book's "Enrollment Details" and uncheck "Keep this book enrolled in KDP Select" box. This option will be available during the first 3 days of each 90-day period during which your book is enrolled. Note that once you begin using your free promotion days, the cancellation period will end.

What happens if my book's KDP Select enrollment expires?
Within several hours after the enrollment has expired, your book will be removed from Kindle Owners' Lending Library (KOLL). You will earn a share of the monthly fund for any time customers read your book in KOLL after the expiration date. Any unused Kindle Countdown Deals option or free promo days will go away. You will begin to earn 35% royalty for sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, India, and Mexico. You can always re-enroll your book in KDP Select books after an enrollment term expires.

What happens if my book's KDP Select enrollment gets renewed?
We'll still pay you a share of the current month's fund based on how many pages Kindle Unlimited or KOLL customers read of your book. In addition, for each new term, you will receive the ability to run Kindle Countdown Deals or 5 days of free promotion for your book. You will continue to earn 70% royalty for sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, India, and Mexico as long as the 70% list price requirements are also met. A promotion (Kindle Countdown Deals or Free Book Promotion) can be scheduled on the day enrollment is renewed. Note that any unused Kindle Countdown Deals option or free promotion days will not roll over.

Reports
What data will I see in my reports?
If enrolled in KDP Select, you will have the following additional data on your reports:

a) Month-To-Date Unit Sales Report: The number of pages Kindle Unlimited or KOLL customers read of your books, under column "Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENP) Read."
b) Prior Months' Royalties Report: For every title, there are five possible transaction types:

i) 35% denotes how much a title earned under the 35% royalty option.
ii) 70% denotes how much a title earned under the 70% royalty option.
iii) "KDP Select Units" denotes how much every KDP Select-enrolled title earned monthly through Kindle Unlimited (KU) and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library (KOLL).
