Buying and Gifting eBooks for Others

To promote your eBooks, you may want to run a social media giveaway, gift your books to readers at an event, or send copies to newsletter subscribers. You can do this by buying your eBook on Amazon and sending it to others. Browse the topics below to learn more about buying multiple and single copies.

Prepaid eBooks

Amazon lets you buy prepaid eBooks to send to others, including multiple copies of your eBook in a single order. When you buy eBooks for others on Amazon's European* sites, or when you buy multiple copies of a Kindle eBook on Amazon.com, we create a set of redemption links, one for each copy of the book. You can send these links to any reader who is in the same country where you bought the copies. Recipients can redeem the eBook from desktop or mobile browsers and download the eBook to registered devices.

*Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, Amazon.it, and Amazon.es

When buying prepaid eBooks:

  • You earn royalties based on the price and royalty option chosen at the time of purchase.
  • You can send copies to any reader in the same country or region where you bought the copies. The buyer and the recipient must use the same Amazon site.
  • Your recipients can receive your eBook on any supported Amazon device or with a free Kindle App on iOS or Android.
  • Any unredeemed copies can be refunded by the purchaser within 60 days or can re-gifted at any time.
  • Recipients cannot exchange eBooks for gift cards or other products.

The following applies to your purchase of prepaid eBooks:

  • Free titles and titles available for pre-order aren't eligible for bulk purchase.
  • Royalties accrue and sales will appear in your reports only when a title is redeemed.
  • An order of multiple eBooks will be considered when evaluating sales rank. The quantity of copies within that order won't be considered.
  • Recipients of eBook copies from a multi-copy purchase are able to leave non-Amazon Verified Purchase reviews based on existing Community Guidelines.

Gifting single copies (Amazon.com)

On Amazon.com, gifting a single Kindle eBook happens if you don't select multiple copies before clicking Buy for Others. When you gift an eBook, the recipient receives a redemption code. The recipient can choose to accept your eBook gift by redeeming the code or to exchange it for a gift card. Customers can only gift titles available through Kindle on Amazon.com, either through Wish lists or detail pages.

As with prepaid eBooks:

  • Free titles and titles available for pre-order aren't eligible for gifting.
  • Royalties will accrue only if the recipient redeems the title.
  • Your royalties will be based on the price and royalty option selected at the time the Kindle gift was purchased.
  • Your gift recipients can receive your title even if they don't own a Fire tablet or Kindle E-reader. They can read your eBook on a supported Amazon device or Kindle reading app.

Unlike multi-copy purchases:

  • You can only gift your book from the US and to readers in the US.
  • Gifts can't be returned by the person who bought them.
  • Recipients can choose to exchange the eBook for a gift card.
  • Gift recipients have the option to return the gift within seven days of downloading.
  • You can enter a recipient's email address to have Amazon send the redemption code on your behalf.
