Create Links to Footnotes

Any footnotes in your eBook must have working links so readers can click easily from content to footnote and back. Once you upload your manuscript file, KDP will convert your footnotes into endnotes to accommodate the reflowable format of Kindle eBooks.

Footnote links must meet these two requirements:
  • Readers must be able to click the footnote in the main body content and go directly to the footnote text.
  • After reading the footnote, readers must be able to click a link and go directly back to the spot they left in the main content.
We're currently unable to support footnotes in fixed layout eBooks.

Create footnotes in Microsoft Word

  1. In your main body content, place the cursor where you want the footnote link to appear.
  2. At the top of the window, in the References menu, click "Insert Footnote." (If you're using Word 2003 or earlier, press the Ctrl, Alt, and F keys on your keyboard at the same time to create footnotes).
  3. The cursor will jump to the footnote section at the bottom of the page.
  4. Enter your footnote text here.
  5. When you upload your book, your footnotes will be converted to endnotes automatically.

Create footnotes in HTML

This is one of the simplest ways to create linked footnotes using HTML, but there are many others. Please note that Amazon requires footnote links to be superscript.

  1. Place this HTML code in your main body content  where you want the footnote link to appear:

  2. Change the number value for each footnote that you include in your text. The first footnote in your book should use the number 1, the second footnote should use 2, the third should use 3, and so on:

  3. After you've set all your footnotes, they'll be converted to endnotes automatically when you upload your book.

Tip: Professional formatting and conversion services are available to prepare your book for print and Kindle.
