Contact UsShould I use KDP’s free ISBN or my own?
You will have different ISBN options depending on the book you are about to publish. Read further for more details.
You can obtain a free ISBN on the Content page during your book setup. Once there, select “Assign me a free ISBN.”
If you are publishing a low-content book, the free KDP ISBN option is not available. You can choose to either use your own ISBN or publish without an ISBN. If you publish without an ISBN, we’ll automatically assign an ASIN for your book. Learn more about low-content books.
Note: Free ISBNs from KDP cannot be used outside of our publishing service. If you plan to publish your book elsewhere, it’s recommended you purchase (and register) your own ISBN.
Note: If you re-use an ISBN for your book that was previously published outside of KDP, any orders placed for your book may be fulfilled with copies that don’t reflect the most recent content you uploaded to KDP.
If you’re looking to use KDP’s free ISBN with another publishing service, it will not work. Our free ISBNs only work on KDP.
