Kindle Format 8

Dear Publishers,

We are pleased to announce that KDP is ready to receive your Kindle Format 8 (KF8) books. Kindle Format 8 is Amazon’s next generation file format, offering a wide range of new features and enhancements – including HTML5 and CSS3 support publishers can use to format all types of books. Many of the formatting features available in word processing programs like Microsoft Word will now appear in your Kindle books, including tables, highlighting, colored text, text wrapped around images, bulleted lists, and more.

Through the use of HTML5 and CSS3, KF8 allows publishers to create great-looking books in all categories, particularly those that require rich formatting and design, such as technical & engineering books and cookbooks. For those doing more advanced formatting by writing HTML5, using design software or working with a conversion resource, KF8 features such as Kindle Panel Views and Kindle Text Pop Up enable great fixed layout books like graphic novels, comics, and kids’ books.

Kindle Fire is the first Kindle device to support KF8 - in the coming months KF8 will be rolled out to our latest generation Kindle e-ink devices as well as our free Kindle reading apps. The books that you have already published through Kindle Direct Publishing are available to readers using Kindle Fire and all other Kindle devices and applications. Unless there are KF8 features you want to take advantage of, you do not have edit your existing books or change the files in any way.

Information on how to update or create books to take advantage of new capabilities in Kindle Format 8 can be found in our updated Simplified Formatting Guide. For more detailed Kindle Publishing Guidelines and a full list of the HTML and CSS tags supported by KF8, including details on creating fixed layout books, click here; or visit our conversion resources page for help converting your files for Kindle. Sincerely,
