Selecting Browse Categories

Selecting a browse category for your book is a lot like deciding where your book should be shelved in a library.

Customers shopping for books on the Amazon Kindle Store can browse by genre and subgenre. When you select browse categories, you're deciding which genres feature your book. KDP uses BISAC Subject Codes, an industry standard system, to help determine where your book should show up for customers. You can learn more and see the most current BISAC codes on the BISAC Subject Codes website.

When you select BISAC Subject Codes in your KDP Bookshelf, we translate them into the most relevant browse paths for each Amazon marketplace you are selling your book in. You can choose up to two BISAC codes for your book. We may also assign additional browse categories depending on your BISAC selections and assigned keywords. For more details, see Categories with Keyword Requirements below.

To determine which categories fit best, you can try searching for categories or titles on the Amazon Kindle Store. You can look for relevant browse categories on the left under the Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks header. Or, you can search for titles similar to yours and find the browse categories assigned to those books by scrolling down the book detail pages to the section "Look for Similar Items by Category."

If you're publishing a companion book based on an original work, such as a summary, study guide or analysis, choose a study aid or literary criticism category.

Choosing the best browse categories

To choose the best browse categories:

  1. Be accurate. Pick the most accurate categories based on the subject matter of your book.

  2. Be specific. It's better to choose specific categories instead of general ones. Customers looking for specific topics will more easily find your book, and we'll display your book in the general categories as well. For example, a book in the "FICTION > Fantasy > Historical" category will also show up in searches for general fiction and general fantasy books. Only select a "General" category if your book is actually a general book about a broad topic.

  3. Don't be redundant. Choosing even a single category will display your book in a variety of searches, so don't list your book in both a category and any or its sub-categories. For example, don't select both "FICTION > Fantasy > Historical" and "FICTION > Fantasy." Selecting one specific, accurate category is more effective than listing a redundant second category.

Children's or teen & young adult categories

To list titles in the Children's or Teen & Young Adult categories on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.de, you must select at least one Juvenile Category (BISAC Subject Code). For Children's categories, you'll also need to set the minimum recommended reading age to 0 – 11 years old. For Teen & Young Adult categories on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, set the minimum recommended reading age to 13 – 17 years old, and for Amazon.de, set the minimum recommended reading age to 12 – 15 years. On Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, titles with a Juvenile Category and a minimum recommended age of 12 may be categorized in Children’s, Teens, or both depending on other information about the title.

See our Help page for more information on entering Age and Grade ranges.
