How EU Taxes Affect Print Books List Price

In the European Union, Value Added Tax (VAT) will be charged for books sold on Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.es, Amazon.fr, Amazon.it, Amazon.nl, Amazon.pl, and Amazon.se. The VAT rate applied may vary based on the type of book, the purchasing customer’s country or region of residence and local VAT laws.

Books can have either a reduced or standard VAT rate that vary from country to country and depending on the type of book. Books with standard rate may include but are not limited to coloring books, notebooks, planners, diaries, activity books, etc. This may also vary depending on purchasing customer’s country or region of residence and local VAT laws.

As a result, while setting up your book list price you’ll see an estimated VAT rate. When a customer places an order for your book, we will automatically add the applicable VAT rate to your selected list price, and will then display the customer retail price including VAT on the customer "Order Summary" during checkout. For this reason, the VAT inclusive retail price for customers may vary from the estimated VAT inclusive list price you see in your account “Royalty & Pricing” section.

Your royalties are not impacted by VAT rate variations. We will use the VAT exclusive list price that you provide to calculate royalties on your book’s sales. You can see your VAT exclusive list price and an estimated VAT inclusive list price for the primary country/region in each marketplace on the “Royalty & Pricing” section of the Paperback Rights & Pricing tab.

Keep in mind that if you set your EU list prices to automatically calculate from your U.S. list price, we will automatically add the applicable VAT rate to the calculated EU list price.
