Formatting Images Within Your Kindle Book

Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) converts images along with text content for upload to the Kindle Store and display on Kindle and other supported devices. KDP can process graphics in the following formats:
  • JPEG
  • GIF
  • PNG
  • BMP

On Kindle E-Ink devices with a black and white screen, images will appear in 16 shades of gray for contrast and clarity. Other Kindle devices and applications, such as the Fire and Kindle for iPhone or PC, will display images in color.

The Kindle eBook format supports JPEG and GIF interior image files. To make sure readers have the best experience with your book, make sure to use high-definition images wherever possible.

An HTML image with an aspect ratio of 9:11 automatically displays with maximum screen coverage.

Image Processing

If your content contains embedded images (for example, in a Microsoft Word document), Kindle Direct Publishing extracts images from the content and replaces them with HTML <img> tags. Each image converts to a separate image file, which becomes a part of your content's publication package.
