Author Copies

Author copies are copies of your live paperback that can be purchased at printing cost. They don't include unpublished changes you've made on KDP. Author copies are currently available in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Dutch. Japanese will be added later.

KDP doesn't currently support paperback distribution to Amazon.com.au, Amazon.com.br, or Amazon.nl. You can buy retail copies of your paperbacks through a Global Store option on Amazon.com.au. However, we can't ship proof copies to Australian addresses. Portuguese language users can place orders from Amazon.com. Dutch language users can place orders from Amazon.de. If your shipping address is in a territory that's part of the Swiss Customs Union, you won't be able to order author copies on KDP. You can, however, order retail copies of your paperback.

How to order author copies

You can order author copies of books in "Live" status:

  1. Go to your Bookshelf and find the paperback you'd like to order.
  2. Click Order Author Copies link in the ellipsis ("...") menu.
  3. Enter the order quantity and choose the Amazon marketplace closest to your shipping destination. After you select the marketplace, the cost will be displayed. This cost is calculated in the currency of the selected marketplace. It doesn't include shipping and applicable taxes.
  4. Click Proceed to checkout. You'll be redirected to the Amazon cart/basket of your chosen marketplace to complete your order.

You can order as many author copies as you want with a maximum of 999 units per order. If you want to order more than 999 author copies at a time, you can place multiple separate orders. You pay shipping charges for each order.

If you submit your order and see that the quantity displayed in the Amazon cart or basket is lower than expected, don't worry. Proceed to checkout, where you can change the quantity to the number of copies you want, with a maximum of 999 units per order.

  • If you submit your order and see that the quantity displayed in the cart or basket is lower than expected, don't worry. Go to checkout, where you can change the quantity to the number of copies you want, with a maximum of 999 units per order:

    1. Add the highest number of copies possible.
    2. Click Submit order. This sends you the cart or basket.
    3. Click Proceed to checkout.
    4. In checkout, click the Change link next to the quantity.
    5. Enter the quantity you want.
    6. Click the Update link. If you don't click Update, the change won't take effect.

  • If your cart/basket is empty or items are missing from it, it's likely you aren't signed in to your account. If you add items to your cart/basket while signed in to your account and then sign out, your items will seem to disappear. If this is the case, you should be able to retrieve your cart/basket simply by signing back in to your account.
  • Sometimes you can have issues ordering copies because of your browser. Try clearing your cache and deleting your cookies. The steps for doing this different for every web browser. Please check your browser's help files for more information.

Shipping options

Author copies are eligible for all paid standard and expedited shipping options available to Amazon customers (excluding Prime). Our manufacturing and delivery estimates are based on the quantity ordered and selected delivery speed. The most up-to-date delivery estimate will display during checkout.

Actual production times fluctuate according to total order volume. There may be times that your order is manufactured faster than expected, but faster delivery isn't guaranteed. We recommend noting the Expected Delivery Date you're given when placing the order. This date takes production time into consideration

Shipping rates

Amazon shipping rates depend on the selected shipping speed and weight or size of the items. You can see the applicable shipping rate for items in your cart. The total shipping and handling cost will be listed under in your order summary.

Pricing and discounts

When you order author copies through your KDP Account, you'll pay the author price for your own books. The author price is the printing cost for your selected marketplace times the number of copies. The trim size, interior type, page count determines this price and does not include shipping charges or taxes. On Amazon.com, any applicable sales tax will be applied at checkout. For European orders, local VAT will be applied at checkout. This price is the lowest price we can offer for your book; we are unable to offer additional discounts.

See order history

  1. Go to Amazon customer account.
  2. Sign in with the account information you used to place the orders.
  3. Click the Your Orders button.

Track your package

After an order has shipped, you can track your packages on Amazon.com or in the Amazon mobile app. From Your Orders, you can find tracking information in your order details. To track your package:

  1. Go to Your Orders.
  2. Go to the order you want to track.
  3. Click Track Package next to your order (if shipped separately). If your package or tracking information is missing:

Cancel items or orders

You can cancel items or orders that haven't entered the shipping process yet by visiting the Order section in Your Account. To cancel an item or an entire order:

  1. Go to Your Orders.
  2. Click Cancel Items.
  3. Select the check box next to each item you wish to remove from the order. If you wish to cancel the entire order, select all of the items.
  4. Click Cancel checked items when finished.
After submitting the cancellation, we'll send you a confirmation message to the e-mail address on your account. You can also confirm that the order was canceled by visiting Your Orders. If you see the order in the "Canceled Orders" section, it was successfully canceled.

Change your order information

You can update your order quantity, billing address, shipping address and payment method on your unshipped orders by visiting the Orders section in Your Account. To edit an order from the Order Summary in Your Account:

  1. Go to Your Orders.
  2. Click the Order Details link for the order you wish to change.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to change the desired information.
  4. Click Change beside the information you want to modify.

Reselling copies

You can resell author copies you ordered from KDP, but royalties aren't paid for author copies.

Damaged, lost, and wrong items

If you received damaged author copies, or if the copies were lost in transit, contact us about a refund.

If you placed an order but received the wrong item, you can return the wrong item for a refund of the item you did not receive through the Online Returns Center by selecting the "Wrong item was sent" reason:

Defective copies

As with all books printed on demand, a small amount of printing and color variance in a given book is expected. Someone comparing more than one copy of a book may notice small differences between two copies. These differences aren't always defects and are not eligible for refunds.

If you think the copies you received are outside the variances we allow, contact us and we'll investigate the issue. If the mistake was on our end, we'll issue a refund.
