Getting started on KDP

How to format your eBook in Word

KDP accepts Arabic language content only in Microsoft Word (.DOC or DOCX) formats. For the best results, follow the steps below. You can also download our conversion and quality guidelines in Arabic.

Step 1

Step 1: Format your title page

Your eBook should include a title page with your book title and author name. You can also add other front matter pages like a copyright and dedication page, but these aren’t required. Make sure the information on your title page exactly matches the book details you entered title setup. Mismatches are one of the most common reasons files are rejected.

Step 2

Step 2: Indent paragraphs, set line spacing, and page breaks

  1. Go to your first chapter and highlight all your paragraphs.
  2. Go to the Home tab and open the Paragraph dialog box by clicking the small diagonal arrow at the bottom right of the "Paragraph" section.
  3. Under "Indentation," select First line from the "Special" drop-down menu.
  4. In the "By" field, enter 0.2" (5 mm).
  5. Under "Spacing," set "Before" and "After" to 0 pt.
  6. Select Single from the "Line spacing" drop-down menu and click OK.
  7. Click where the chapter text ends and click Page Break.
  8. Repeat these steps for each chapter.

Step 3

Step 3: Create an active table of contents

An active table of contents is one of the features eBook readers need and expect. Why? Because the table of contents lets them to jump to specific places in the book by clicking on links embedded in the text. eBooks don't have page numbers, and page counts change when the reader adjusts the text size. To create an active table of contents:
  1. Go to your first chapter and highlight the chapter title.
  2. Go to the Home tab, and in the "Styles" section, click Heading 1.
  3. If you want, add additional formatting (e.g., alignment, bold text, or font size).
  4. Repeat these steps for each chapter. Be sure to apply any additional formatting consistently.
  5. Click where you want to insert your table of contents.
  6. Go to the References tab and click Table of Contents.
  7. Select Automatic Table 1.
  8. Click Table of Contents again, but this time select Custom Table of Contents.
  9. Uncheck the Show Page Numbers box, set "Show levels" to 1, and click OK.
  10. When asked if you want to replace the table of contents, click Yes.
  11. Highlight the table of contents title "Contents."
  12. Go to the Insert tab, and in the "Links" section, click Bookmark.
  13. Enter "toc" (without the quotation marks) into the "Bookmark name" field and click Add.
  14. Insert a page break after your table of contents.

Step 4

Step 4: Preview your eBook

Before you upload your eBook to KDP, check out the tips below, and make any necessary updates to your Word file. These tips include the most common reasons Arabic files are rejected. Also see our Help page for details on our quality guidelines.
We recommend reviewing your eBook in Kindle Previewer, a desktop application that shows you how your eBook will look on tablets, Kindle E-readers, and phones. Previewer can help you find and fix formatting and typographical errors.

See the table below for our top tips:

Tip 1: Make sure text direction is set to right-to-left Arabic is a "right-to-left" language, so we’ll reject files set to left-to-right. To check the text direction in Word:

  1. Go to the File tab.
  2. Choose Options, and click Language.
  3. In the "Choose Editing Languages" section, add the Arabic dialect you want.
  4. Click Add.
Tip 2: Check for typos Common typos in Arabic-language eBooks include:

  • Text rendered as a tofu box (e.g., )
  • Numbers in place of letters and vice versa (e.g., يعود تاريخ السويد الحديثة إلى عام ٢٣ه١)
  • Incorrectly placed Tashkeel (e.g., أنِا طالب instead of أنَا طالب)
  • Irregular spacing between in letters between words (e.g., بدأ ن ش ر روايته الجديدة أولاد حارتنا في جريدة الأهرام)
  • Extra character added in word (e.g., وأنا لن أتمنى لوك)

Found a typo in your eBook? Look for the term throughout your file to ensure all occurrences are corrected. The search function in Kindle Previewer can help you find and fix all instances.
Tip 3: Remove promotional, inappropriate, and disappointing content Review your eBook for content like ads, barcodes, and links to commercial eBook store sites or competitor websites. We do not allow content that misleads or disappoints our customers, including content whose primary purpose is to solicit or advertise.

If you find content like this, remove it from your entire book. The search function in Kindle Previewer can help you find and remove all instances. See our content and quality guidelines.
Tip 4: Check the book details you entered during title setup Make sure you chose "Arabic" from the menu in the "Language" section of the Kindle eBook Details page. The language you choose and the language in which the eBook is written must match.

Also make sure that the book details (e.g., title, author name) you entered are in Arabic. The language you choose and the language in which the book details are entered must match.
Tip 5: Make sure your book consists primarily of text Your eBook should be reflowable and consist primarily of text, not scanned pages from a physical book. Your readers won't be able to change text size in the scans.
