Kindle eBook Pre-Order

You can set up eBook pre-orders to start promoting your book before it's released, through channels such as Author Central, Goodreads, your personal website, and elsewhere.

Pre-orders will contribute toward sales rank and other Kindle Store merchandising even before your eBook's released, helping more readers discover your eBook.

This article explains what a pre-order is, and important reminders before selecting your eBook for pre-order.

Note: Pre-order is currently available for eBooks. For paperbacks, you can schedule a Release Date.

What is pre-order?

Pre-order allow customers to order your eBook as early as one year before the eBook is released and available for download.

You can set up eBooks for pre-order in Kindle Stores worldwide when creating an eBook. When you submit an eBook for pre-order, your eBook content will not be available for download yet. However, an Amazon detail page will be published for customers to be able to pre-order the eBook.

Note: If you upload a manuscript at the time of submitting your pre-order, Amazon may allows readers to preview samples of your book. Books without an ISBN, such as low-content books will not display a reading sample. Learn more about Read Sample.

When your eBook is published on the scheduled release date, your eBook content will be delivered to customers who have ordered it.

Pre-order reminders

  • Eligibility: You can only set up a pre-order for new eBook titles. You can create up to 10 pre-order titles at a time. After each book release, you can set up additional pre-orders. Public domain eBooks aren't eligible for pre-order.
  • Deadline for pre-order submission: To successfully set up a pre-order, you must upload your final manuscript and submit the pre-order more than 72 hours in advance of the scheduled release date. Failure to submit the pre-order on time will result in a pre-order cancellation. This will prevent you from setting up a pre-order on any eBook for one year.
  • Making updates to pre-order: You will not be able to update your pre-order after submitting your final manuscript for up to 72 hours. This is to ensure your eBook meet our publishing guidelines. After the review process is completed, you may make changes to your manuscript or eBook details. Review pre-order statuses for more information.
  • Cancelling a pre-order release: if you choose to cancel a pre-order release, such as unpublishing your eBook, you will not be able to set up any pre-orders for one year. Review delay or cancel a release for more information.
  • KDP Select. You can enroll your pre-order eBook in KDP Select, and the KDP Select term will begin on the eBook's release date. You can only schedule Free Book Promotions, and Kindle Countdown Deals after the book's release.
