EU VAT Invoices

If you reside in an EU Member State and have a registered EU VAT number, you'll need to provide your EU VAT number when completing your KDP tax profile.

After entering your EU VAT number, you must also accept the Amazon Self-Billing agreement to allow Amazon to generate VAT invoices on your behalf and maintain timely payment processing.

Note: Providing your VAT number is separate from any tax forms you may have submitted (such as a W-8BEN or W-9 form).

Amazon Self-Billing Agreement

The Amazon Self-Billing Agreement is a formal agreement that establishes the terms between you and Amazon to set out the process for Amazon to generate VAT invoices on your behalf.

We'll ask you to renew the agreement every 10 years, or earlier, if your tax details change.

How to view and access the self-billing agreement
  1. Sign in to your KDP account: https://kdp.amazon.com
  2. Complete two-step verification using preferred method
  3. Go to Your Account
  4. Go to Tax Information
  5. Under the Automated Payments column, click on Self-billing Agreement

A pop-up window will display the agreement's terms and conditions

You must accept the agreement to ensure that VAT invoices are generated on your behalf. Payments issued to you by Amazon Media EU S.à r.l. may be delayed if you do not accept the agreement.

You can access and view the Amazon Self-Billing agreement at any time by following the above steps.

Value Added Tax (VAT) invoices

We'll process tax invoices after each payment period. These invoices are generated on your behalf and will reflect payments issued by Amazon Media EU S.à r.l. for royalties earned on EU marketplaces.

Important: Tax invoices will only be generated for EU-based authors who provide a registered EU VAT number and accept the Amazon Self-Billing Agreement when completing their tax profile. If you don't provide a registered EU VAT number and accept the Amazon Self-Billing Agreement, tax invoices won't be generated, even if your payments are issued from Amazon Media EU S.à r.l.

How to view your tax invoices
  1. Sign in to your KDP account: https://kdp.amazon.com
  2. Complete two-step verification using preferred method
  3. Go to Your Account, select Tax Invoices
  4. You will be redirected to the Tax Invoice dashboard. Within this dashboard, you will see the processed VAT invoices. You can also specify the date range to view your tax invoices.

Note: Tax invoices are securely stored and available to access for 10 years. For example, if the invoice is issued on March 31, 2026, the availability period of that invoice is March 31, 2026 – March 31, 2036. After the 10-year period, you will not be able to access the invoice.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need to provide my EU VAT number?
If you're VAT registered in an EU Member State and have a VAT registration number issued by an EU tax authority, providing your registered EU VAT number during tax profile submission will allow Amazon to generate VAT invoices on your behalf and maintain timely payments.

I'm an individual author without a registered business. Do I need a VAT number?
No. If you are an individual author and do not operate as a registered business, you are not required to have an EU VAT number. VAT registration is a requirement for businesses carrying out taxable activities, not for individual, non-business authors.

How can I get an EU VAT number?
The EU VAT number is a unique identification number assigned to businesses by EU tax authorities for VAT purposes. For more information about getting an EU VAT number, please refer to the official European Commission website on VAT identification numbers. If you require additional tax support, please consult your tax advisor. Each EU Member State may have different VAT number requirements. Amazon does not provide tax advisory or compliance services.

I don’t live in Luxemburg, am I still required to provide my EU VAT number?
Yes, KDP operates under a multi-party agreement structure in which the 'Amazon parties' include Amazon Media EU S.à.r.l., a société à responsabilité limitée organized under the laws of Luxembourg. As such, KDP's operations within the European Union fall under the jurisdiction of Luxembourg law, and publishers, authors, and associated teams must ensure compliance with applicable Luxembourg and EU regulations. I have previously completed my tax profile. Why do I need to complete my tax profile again?
If you receive payments from Amazon Media EU S.à r.l., you will need to complete your tax profile and provide your EU VAT number (if you have one) for Amazon to be able to generate VAT invoices on your behalf. Learn more about Complete Tax Profile.

What is the Amazon Self-Billing Agreement?
The Amazon Self-Billing Agreement is a formal agreement that establishes the terms between you and Amazon to set out the process for Amazon to generate VAT invoices on your behalf, and your obligation to notify us if your tax details change.

Do I need to accept the agreement?
Yes, you must accept the Amazon Self-Billing Agreement. If you reside in an EU Member State and provide a registered EU VAT number when completing your tax profile, accepting the agreement is required.

Will historical tax invoices also be available to me?
No, historical invoices will not be available. Invoices will be generated on your behalf for future payments made after you accept the Amazon Self-Billing agreement.

I accepted the Amazon Self-Billing Agreement, when will I see my invoices?
Tax invoices will be available to view and download every month after your royalties are paid. Learn more about KDP Payments.

I'm currently submitting my invoices manually. Do I need to continue doing that after this change?
No. If you provide us with your registered EU VAT number and accept the Amazon Self-Billing Agreement, we'll issue tax invoices on your behalf automatically. You can access these invoices from your Tax Invoice dashboard.

Why does my payment report differ from my tax invoice statements?
Your tax invoice statement may not match your payment report because invoices only reflect payments issued by Amazon Media EU S.à r.l. for royalties earned on EU marketplaces.

Will the tax invoices replace my U.S. year-end tax forms?
No. Tax invoices generated won’t replace the U.S. year-end tax forms you receive annually. Learn more about Year End Tax Forms.
