Checking eligibility

After your eBook is Live, we will complete an eligibility check against the criteria below. If your eBook is eligible, the option to Translate your eBook will appear in your KDP Bookshelf.

If you would like to translate an eBook that’s ineligible, you can review the eligibility criteria and publish updates to the source eBook. The link to create a translation should appear on your Bookshelf after the updated eBook is Live and passes the eligibility check.

Note: We reserve the right to determine the types of eBooks that we accept in the beta program. We may choose not to accept your eBook for creation of a translation or to remove your translation from sale at any time.

Eligibility criteria and troubleshooting

Review requirements for your eBook to be eligible to create a translation using Kindle Translate and potential troubleshooting steps below. If your eBook is ineligible, check the reason(s) listed by selecting Why isn't my eBook eligible? on your KDP Bookshelf.

not be a preorder To be eligible, your eBook's title cannot be a preorder.
have a supported primary language Your eBook's primary language must be set as English, Spanish, or German before you'll have the option to create translations using Kindle Translate.

not be in the public domain Public domain content is not eligible for Kindle Translate.
complete post-publishing processing We’re setting up the start and end reading locations for your eBook to prepare the translations. This process can take up to 72 hours.

If you still see this message for more than 72 hours, contact us for assistance.
have a cover To be eligible, your eBook must include a cover. You can use our Cover Creator tool to create an eBook cover in minutes. If you prefer to create your own cover, refer to our eBook cover criteria.

be suitable for translation Consider the types of books that are best suited for translation. Your eBook must not be empty or have empty chapters. Books with a lot of images, contain multiple langugaes, have tables, graphs, or code excerpts may not provide the best reader experience due to the current limitations of the Kindle Translate service (for example, a cookbook or comic book).

Format and quality troubleshooting

Kindle Translate is currently a beta offering and we’re working to improve the service over time. Due to limitations of our service, there are certain types of content that achieve the best translation results. Please consider the following.

Content that translates well:
  • Fiction works (novels, short stories, narrative non-fiction)
  • Business books and self-help guides
  • Straightforward instructional content
  • Standard prose and dialogue
Content that may not translate well:
  • Highly technical or specialized terminology
  • Complex literary devices and wordplay
  • Poetry and creative works with intricate language
  • Content with extensive cultural references
  • Books with complex formatting or structure
Elements that can't be translated:
  • Text embedded in images, charts, or graphics
  • Complex infographics and data visualizations
  • Language excerpts that aren't in your book's primary language
  • Certain front and back matter elements
