eBook Update Customer Notifications

You can change your eBook at any time and republish the updated version. New customers always receive the latest version at purchase. For customers who bought your eBook before the update, the new version is delivered automatically after they finish a reading session and close the book. This process preserves their highlights, bookmarks, and notes.

I want to send my updated eBook to customers who previously purchased it.

After you republish an updated version of your eBook, the updated content is automatically delivered to customers who previously purchased it. This happens after a customer finishes a reading session and closes the book; no action is needed from you or from us.

How automatic delivery works

  • Updates are delivered to previous purchasers automatically.
  • Delivery happens after a reader closes the book following your update; it may not happen instantly, but it does not require manual intervention.
  • Your readers' reading position, highlights, bookmarks, and notes are always preserved. Delivery will wait until it can be done safely to protect these.
  • Smaller, targeted corrections deliver more quickly and smoothly. Significant content changes may take a little bit longer as the system carefully maps reader's annotations to the updated version.

What to expect after republishing

  • Allow a few days for delivery to reach most readers.
  • If a reader hasn't opened the book after your update, delivery occurs the next time they open and close it.
  • Readers who have turned off "Automatic Book Update" in their Kindle settings will not receive your updates automatically. This is a reader-controlled setting within the Kindle device. Readers who have this turned off need to manually update their books from Manage Your Content and Devices.

When to request a customer update (critical quality issues only)

  • Customer updates are reserved for critical quality issues that significantly affect readability. We limit these updates because sending updated content to customers may erase their notes, bookmarks or highlights. To protect the reading experience, we carefully review each request. We are unable to send content updates for changes such as:
    • Added, deleted, or changed words, sentences, pages, chapters, or images as enhancements that are not related to quality issues.
    • Changed a character's name or your eBook's plot.
    • Added, deleted, or changed links or marketing information.
    • Made significant changes that warrant a new edition.
  • Check your Book status. Make sure the updates you submitted are published, and the book's status is Live.
  • Check your entire eBook. Make sure you've corrected all errors.
  • Gather all the information we need. You need to send us the ASIN, detailed examples of the corrections you made, and the Kindle location number. Location numbers are the digital equivalent of physical page numbers and provide a way to easily reference a place in your reading material regardless of font size.

I bought a copy of my book. The updated version was not sent to me.

Note: After republishing, allow a few days for the automatic update to reach your device. Updates are delivered after you close the book during a reading session.

If you have not received the update after a few days, confirm: 1) your device is connected to wireless internet (Wi-Fi), and 2) "Automatic Book Update" is turned on. To turn on automatic book updates:

  1. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices.
  2. Click the Preferences tab.
  3. Scroll to Automatic Book Update.
  4. Choose On.

If your book still doesn't update, contact Kindle customer service.

I want to send the updated version of my eBook to myself.

KDP is not able to send updated versions to personal devices (or app).
