Cover Studio

Cover Studio is available to a select group of authors as part of a beta and isn't open to new sign-ups. If you're a beta user and have feedback, click the Submit beta feedback button in Cover Studio to share it through a short survey..
Cover Studio is a free design tool built into your KDP account. You can use it to create professional covers for your eBook, paperback, or hardcover without installing software. It saves your cover design so you can use it across formats without recreating it each time. The editor includes 50+ genre templates with real-time customization, a stock image library with images pre-licensed for commercial use, layer management for arranging design elements, real-time validation that checks your cover for issues before submission, and multi-level undo and redo.

Cover Studio works in your browser with no installation required. It's compatible with Chrome 70+, Edge 79+, Firefox 63+, and Safari 14+.

If you created a cover in the previous version of Cover Creator, you can continue to use Cover Creator to edit your cover.

Supported formats and languages

Cover Studio supports three book formats. Covers don't sync between formats, but you can choose a cover you've already created when you start a new format.

  • Paperback and Hardcover covers include a front cover, spine, and back cover. Spine width is calculated automatically based on your page count and paper type.
  • eBook covers include the front cover only. The recommended size is 1600 × 2560 pixels.

Cover Studio is supported in these languages except for the following languages, book type, and KDP account:

Book Format kdp.amazon.com kdp.amazon.co.jp
eBook Japanese, Polish, and Ukrainian are not supported. Cover Studio is not supported.
Paperback Japanese, Hebrew, and Yiddish are not supported. Cover Studio is not supported.
Hardcover Hebrew and Yiddish are not supported. Cover Studio is not supported.

How to Use Cover Studio

Launch Cover Studio

To use Cover Studio, you need to have created a title on your Bookshelf. If you've created a title, follow the steps below to launch Cover Studio. For the best experience, use Firefox or Chrome.

  1. Go to your Bookshelf and find the title you want to create a cover for.
  2. Click the ellipsis button (…) next to the book you want to update and choose Edit book content.
  3. On the Content tab, scroll down to the Book Cover section and click Launch Cover Studio.

Note: If you have trouble launching Cover Studio, try clearing the cache in your web browser. For instructions on clearing your cache, consult your browser's help documentation. You can also try a forced reload while holding the Shift key and click the Reload or Refresh button in your browser.

Choose a template or start with a blank canvas

After you launch Cover Studio, you can start your design from a genre template or a blank canvas. Templates include pre-arranged text and image placeholders that you can customize. If you want full control over your layout, select the blank canvas option.

If you're designing a print cover, the canvas automatically includes your front cover, spine, and back cover areas. For eBooks, the canvas shows the front cover only.

  1. Go to Templates.
  2. Select a template from the gallery or click Blank to start your own design. You can also use the search bar to find specific styles.

Add and edit text

To add text:

  1. Go to Text and choose the type of text you want to add. Options include subtitle, book description, body text, or a text box.
  2. After placing your text, you can change the font, size, color, and alignment.

All text needs to be at least 7 points. The Checks panel will highlight anything smaller, and you can use the Auto-fix option to correct it.

Add shapes and arrange layers

Go to Elements to add shapes, lines, and other design elements to your cover. Every element on the canvas exists on its own layer. You can reorder layers to control which elements appear in front of or behind others.

Add images

Use Images to browse the stock image library, or upload your own images in JPG, PNG, or TIFF format. Stock images are pre-licensed for commercial use on your cover. After you place an image, you can resize, crop, and reposition it on the canvas.

  • Keep images at 300 DPI for best results. Anything below 200 DPI won't be accepted.
  • For paperback and hardcover, include 0.125 inches of bleed on all sides.
  • Keep all critical content inside the red dotted line (safe zone) on the canvas.

Uploaded images are reusable across formats within the same account.

Add Backgrounds

Use Backgrounds to customize the background of your cover using colors, patterns, textures, or images.

  • Fill color: The Fill section sets the base color for your background. By default, it's set to white. To change it, click the color field and the color panel will display for you to choose a new color.
  • Additional backgrounds: Below the Fill section, you can browse and layer patterns, textures, and images to enhance your cover design. Use the search bar to find specific styles, or scroll through the available options.

Use the Checks panel to fix issues

The Checks panel runs real-time validation on your cover and highlights issues as you design. There are two types of issues:

  • Errors block you from submitting your cover. You'll need to fix all errors before you can proceed.
  • Warnings allow submission, but your cover could be rejected during the review process if they aren't addressed.

Select any issue in the Checks panel to see a description and suggested fix. For some errors, you can select Auto-fix to resolve them automatically.

Save and preview your cover

Cover Studio doesn't auto-save, so save your work regularly by selecting Save as draft.

Your cover is saved to your KDP account and remains fully editable. To see how your cover will look when printed or published, select Preview from the dropdown menu. The preview shows your full cover layout including bleed and trim areas for print formats.

After you've reviewed and resolved issues in the Checks panel, select Submit. Your cover is sent directly to KDP for publishing. You can return to Cover Studio at any time to edit and resubmit your cover. Your previous design will still be there.

Troubleshooting common issues

If your cover won't submit, check the Checks panel for unresolved issues. All issues need to be resolved before you can proceed. Common issues are:

  • Blurry image in preview: The image is likely below 300 DPI. Replace it with a higher-resolution file.
  • Spine text not appearing: Confirm your book has at least 79 pages, because spine text isn't supported on shorter books.
  • Elements look cut off: Make sure all critical content is inside the red dotted line (safe zone) and not in the bleed area.

Select any issue in the Checks panel to see a description and suggested fix. For minimum font size errors, you can select Auto-fix to adjust all affected text to 7 points automatically.
