Royalties in Kindle+

Your Kindle eBooks and audiobooks enrolled in KDP Select are included in Kindle+, where you’re eligible to earn royalties from the KDP Select Global Fund. Your earnings are based on Kindle+ subscriber reading and listening activity, measured in Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENP). You’re paid for the first time a subscriber reads or listens to a given page in your book. Customers can read and listen to your Kindle eBook or audiobook as many times as they want when they download it using Kindle+. This is true even if your KDP Select enrollment period has expired, and you choose not to re-enroll.

Note: Audiobooks in Kindle+ are available for distribution in the US marketplace only at this time.

KDP Select Global Fund

The amount you earn from the KDP Select Global Fund will be determined based on your share of total pages read or listened to by Kindle+ subscribers.

In Kindle+, you earn the first time a subscriber reads or listens to a given page in your book. If that reader returns to the same page in the same or a different format, we consider it re-reading (like we do today). The same is true if a customer listens first and reads second. When customers Read and Listen at the same time (Immersive Reading), and if rates between the formats differ, you earn at the higher rate. Here are examples to show how this works:

  • A subscriber borrows your eBook through Kindle+ and reads pages 1-50. You earn royalties for these KENP Read. The same reader then listens to the audiobook of the same title through Kindle+ and listens to pages 51-100. You earn additional royalties for pages 51-100 listened to.
  • A subscriber borrows your eBook through Kindle+ and reads pages 1-50. As above, you earn royalties for those KENP Read. The same reader then listens to the audiobook of the same title through Kindle+ and listens to pages 1-50. Like eBooks, we consider this re-reading and you don't earn additional royalties for this activity.

In both scenarios, the same is true if the subscriber listened first and read second. When a subscriber Reads and Listens at the same time (Immersive Reading), you earn royalties for KENP Read once. If rates between the formats differ, you earn at the higher rate.

We review the size of the KDP Select Global Fund each month to make it compelling for authors to enroll their books in KDP Select. We announce the size of the fund monthly in our community forum.

We support our authors' efforts to promote their Kindle eBooks and audiobooks. We also work to prevent any manipulation of the Kindle experience. We do not permit authors to offer or participate in marketing that incentivizes Kindle+ customers to read their Kindle eBooks, or listen to their audiobooks, in exchange for compensation of any kind. This includes payment (whether in the form of money or gift certificates), bonus content, entry to a contest or sweepstakes, discounts on future purchases, extra product, or other gifts.

Because we're continuously looking to improve our authors' experience, we have systems in place to monitor for potential manipulation.

Note: The share of fund allocated to each country varies based on several factors, such as exchange rates, customer reading and listening behavior, and local subscription pricing. Author earnings are determined by their share of total pages read and total pages listened to. Actual payouts may vary. To see your earnings, check your Prior Months’ Royalty Report.

Royalties

You'll get one royalty payment for pages read and listened to in Kindle+. We'll pay according to the same payment schedule and payment method you selected for your other KDP sales.

Enrolled in KDP Select

If your eBook or audiobook is enrolled in KDP Select, we'll pay you a share of the current month’s KDP Select Global Fund.

For eBooks only:

You will be eligible to earn a KDP Select bonus. Additionally, for each new term, you can choose to run either a Kindle Countdown Deal (KCD) or a Free Book Promotion. You will earn 70% royalty for sales in Brazil, Japan, India, and Mexico if the 70% digital list price requirements are met.

Only one type of promotion can be used during the KDP Select enrollment period. A promotion (Kindle Countdown Deals (KCD) or Free Book Promotion) can be scheduled on the day enrollment is renewed. Note that any unused Kindle Countdown Deal (KCD) or Free Book Promotion days will not rollover. Visit renewal timelines for more details.

Not enrolled in KDP Select

If you cancel or update your KDP Select auto-renewal settings, your Kindle eBook or audiobook will be removed from Kindle+. You'll earn a share of the monthly KDP Select Global Fund for pages read or listened to after the enrollment end date. You can re-enroll your Kindle eBook or audiobook in KDP Select after an enrollment term expires.

For eBooks only:

Unused Kindle Countdown Deals or Free Book Promotion days will go away. For sales in Brazil, Japan, India, and Mexico, your royalties will go back to 35%.

Kindle+ Reporting

If you're enrolled in KDP Select, Kindle+ reporting activity on the Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENP) report is broken out by format. This is designed to give you more visibility and insight into how Kindle+ subscribers engage with your content across formats.

KENP Report

The KENP report shows customers’ Kindle+ reading and listening activity only. You can filter the report by author, book title, marketplaces, and format (Kindle+ read, Kindle+ listened).

To download and save a copy of your report:

  1. Select Download Report at the top right-hand of the page.
  2. On the excel spreadsheet, go to the KENP tab to view specific reporting information.

Note: Monthly KENP numbers may change and will be finalized near the 15th of the following month for pages read and listened to. For more information, go to KENP Report.

Prior Months’ Royalties Report

When viewing Kindle+ activity from your Prior Months’ Royalties Report, you’ll see the Kindle+ royalties column for combined pages read and listened. Audible Plus listening from your audiobooks with virtual voice is included with Audible ALC royalties in the Audible royalties column of the Prior Month's Royalties report. Note: Audible royalties for your ACX audiobooks will continue to be found in your ACX account only.

To download and save a copy of your report, select Download Report at the top right-hand of the page. For details on how to understand the downloaded report, visit Prior Months' Royalties Report.

For authors established in France

For Kindle eBooks only, authors established in France set a price per reading unit (on KDP, per page read) for each eBook included in Kindle+. Kindle+ subscribers residing in France get reading credits when paying their subscription. These credits are "mutualized" among all subscribers residing in France. This allows all subscribers living in France to read a large number of Kindle eBooks included in their subscription.

To set a per-page price:

  1. Go to your KDP Bookshelf.
  2. Next to the Kindle eBook enrolled in KDP Select, click the ellipsis button ("…").
  3. Select Manage KDP Select.
  4. Enter your price information in the window that appears.

Only KDP authors established in France need to set a price per page for their Kindle eBooks included in Kindle+. The royalties of KDP authors based in France don’t vary based on the price per page that is set.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get paid if a customer reads my eBook and then listens to my audiobook?

Kindle+ royalties are paid based on first-time customer consumption of each page for a given book. If a customer reads your eBook first, that counts as the initial consumption. If they then listen to the audiobook of the same title, that is a re-read and does not generate additional royalties. The same applies if a customer listens to the audiobook first and then reads your eBook of the same title. When customers Read and Listen at the same time (Immersive Reading), and the KENP rates between formats differ, royalties will be paid at the higher rate.

How are royalties estimated for Kindle+?

If your book is enrolled in KDP Select, royalties earned from pages read and listened to are available the following month, when the KDP Select Global Fund is announced. You can estimate royalties earned from KENP read and listened using the KENP Rate from the last time the KDP Select Global Fund was announced, or you can estimate based on an increase or decrease. The KENP Rate changes every month, so your actual royalties when the fund is announced will differ from your estimation.

Will my audiobook in Kindle+ impact existing sales with Audible and ACX royalties?

Your Audible earnings are separate from Kindle+. The many Kindle+ subscribers who may not have an Audible membership can discover your audiobook, reaching new customers in addition to your existing audience. Enrollment in KDP Select is designed to expand your reach and grow your overall earnings.
