KDP Select Overview
What is KDP Select?
KDP Select is an optional program for you to
reach even more readers and gives you the opportunity to earn more
money. If you choose to make a book exclusive to the Kindle Store,
which is a requirement during your book's enrollment in KDP Select, the book is
eligible to be included in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library (KOLL) and you can earn
a share of the fund based on how frequently the book is borrowed (click here
to see how payments are calculated). Currently, the Kindle Owners Lending
library is available for readers in the following marketplaces: Amazon.com,
Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, and Amazon.co.jp. In addition, by choosing
KDP Select, you will have access to a new set of promotional tools, including
Kindle Countdown Deals (limited time promotional discounting for your book) and
Free Book Promotion (readers worldwide can get your book free for a limited
time). Authors and publishers can enroll a single title, their whole catalog or
anything in between within KDP Select. By enrolling your book in KDP Select,
you will also be eligible to earn 70% royalty for sales to customers in Brazil,
Japan, India, and Mexico.
What is the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library?
With an Amazon Prime membership, Kindle owners can now choose from thousands of books to borrow for free once a month, with no due dates. For more info, click here.
Why should I choose KDP Select?
2. Maximize your book’s sales potential – Choose from two promotional tools including: Kindle Countdown Deals, time-bound promotional discounts for your book, available on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, while earning royalties; or Free Book Promotion, where readers can get your book free for a limited time.
3. Reach a new audience – Help readers discover your books by making them available through the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library and reach the growing number of Amazon Prime customers in the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, and Japan.
If my books are distributed in
the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, can customers still buy it?
Yes, your books will still be available for anyone to buy in the Kindle Store, like they’ve always been, and you will continue to earn royalties from those sales like you do today.
If my book is enrolled in KDP Select, can I still send copies of my book to proofreading and editing reviewers?
We do allow publishers to provide professional reviewers with a copy of the book by email for the purpose of editing, proofreading and helping with other quality improvements.
What does it mean to publish exclusively on Kindle?
When you choose KDP Select for a book, you're committing to make the digital format of that book available exclusively through KDP during the entirety of its enrollment in the program.
All content made exclusive to Amazon in KDP Select must remain for sale on our site only; it cannot be available for free or for purchase in digital format anywhere else, including publishing the content of your book on the web, including on your own website, blog, etc. However, you may choose to make up to 10% of your book available on other sites as a sample, as well as continue to distribute your book in physical format, or in any format other than digital. See the KDP Select Terms and Conditions for more information.
If my book appears to be available for sale or distribution on another website, is it eligible for KDP Select?
No. If your book is marketed in a way that indicates it is available for distribution, for sale or for free, then it is not eligible for KDP Select. For example, one of the possible indicators that the book is available for distribution may be the presence of instructions on another website or sales channel for downloading or obtaining the book.
Can I re-enroll my book in KDP Select if it was removed previously due to violation of the exclusivity requirements?
Yes, you can. Once you ensure that your book is not available elsewhere in digital format, it is eligible for re-enrollment.
I gave a third party the right to distribute my book through other websites, and my book continues to be available through that third party on another website. Can I enroll it in KDP Select?
No. If you gave a third party the right to distribute your book and it is available through that third party on another website, you cannot enroll it in KDP Select.
What kinds of books are eligible to enroll in KDP Select?
See eligibility section here.
Where can I see the terms and conditions of KDP Select?

Are there any other opportunities for KDP Select books and authors to be promoted?
Yes, KDP may publically announce the top digital books borrowed, including the author, publisher, number of borrows and KDP Select fund royalties earned.
How do I earn 70% royalty for sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, India, and Mexico?
Your title must be enrolled in KDP Select and meet list price requirements in order to be eligible to earn 70% royalty for sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, India, and Mexico. If your book is not enrolled in KDP Select or meet list price requirements, you will earn 35% royalty.
What books are eligible to be enrolled in KDP Select? Are any authors or publishers excluded?
Most books can be enrolled in KDP Select. The only books that cannot be enrolled are those for which you do not have exclusive rights for the primary content of the book (i.e., this content is in the public domain or others may also have the right to publish this content).Other factors, including royalty option, price, genre, etc., do not impact a book’s eligibility. If you have questions about your book’s exclusion from KDP Select, please write to KDP Support by clicking "Contact Us" at the bottom of the page.
All authors and publishers, regardless of where they live, are eligible to enroll their books in KDP Select. Books with rights to be sold in marketplaces where the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library is available will automatically be included in the relevant libraries upon enrollment.
Can I add some new content (e.g. bonus chapter, author’s commentary, etc.) to a book that I offer on another platform to make my book exclusive and eligible for KDP Select?
No. You can’t enroll your book in KDP Select
by simply adding a bonus chapter, author’s commentary section, etc. to a book
that is available elsewhere. See the KDP
Select Terms and Conditions for more details.
Do I have to enroll all my titles in KDP Select? Is there a limitation on the number of titles to enroll?
No. KDP Select is an optional program. If you choose to take advantage of KDP Select, you can enroll a single title, your whole catalog, or anything in between. Titles that are not enrolled in KDP Select do not have to be exclusive to Kindle.
How do I enroll my titles in KDP Select? When does enrollment become effective?
There are two ways to sign up:
a) You can enroll existing titles from the bookshelf in one of two ways: Scroll to the column titled "KDP Select" and click on "Enroll" or click the "Edit Book Details" link found in the "Other Book Actions" column to open your book details page. From there, check the box "Enroll this book in KDP Select" and continue publishing your book.
b) You can enroll new titles from the book details page. Simply check the box “Enroll this book in KDP Select” and continue publishing your book.
Enrollment is effective immediately for titles already live in the Kindle Store. Enrollment for new titles goes into effect once the book is available for sale on our website.
Can I enroll my book in KDP Select without participating in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library or vice-versa?
No. Only books enrolled in KDP Select are eligible to be included in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. All Kindle Select-enrolled books with US rights will be automatically included in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.
For those books enrolled in KDP Select, can I change the metadata (e.g. Royalty option, book description, etc.)?
Yes, you can change all of the metadata of a KDP Select-enrolled book. From example, KDP Select is available for books in both the 70% and 35% royalty options. You can switch a KDP Select-enrolled book’s royalty option without impacting its enrollment in KDP Select.
Can I un-publish my KDP Select-enrolled titles and re-publish them on KDP later?
Tell me more about un-publishing my titles that are enrolled in KDP Select?
You can un-publish your KDP Select-enrolled titles at any time during the term. However, keep in mind that your commitment to the KDP Select terms and conditions, including exclusivity, will continue even after you have un-published your title. In other words, you cannot un-publish your KDP Select-enrolled title from KDP and make it available on another sales channel before the title’s current KDP Select term expires.
Renewal and Cancellation
How do I renew my book’s enrollment in KDP Select? What if I don’t want to renew?
For your convenience, every KDP Select-enrolled title will be automatically renewed for another 90 days unless you opt not to automatically renew.
If you don’t want to renew, simply go to the book’s "Edit book details" page and uncheck the box next to "Automatically renew this book's enrollment in KDP Select for another 90 days." You can do this at any time. Cancelling automatic renewal does not affect the book’s enrollment in KDP Select for the current term.
How do I cancel my book’s enrollment from KDP Select?
Once your book’s term in KDP Select begins, you will have 3 days to cancel. To do so, simply go to the book's "Enrollment Details" and uncheck "Keep this book enrolled in KDP Select" box. This option will be available during the first 3 days of each 90-day period during which your book is enrolled. Note that once you begin using your free promotion days, the cancellation period will end.
What happens if my book’s KDP Select enrollment expires?
Within several hours after the enrollment has expired, your book will be removed from Kindle Owners' Lending Library (KOLL). You will earn a share of the monthly fund for any KOLL borrows that happen after the expiration date. Any unused Kindle Countdown Deals option or free promo days will go away. You will begin to earn 35% royalty for sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, India, and Mexico. You can always re-enroll your book in KDP Select books after an enrollment term expires.
What happens if my book's KDP
Select enrollment gets renewed?
You will continue to receive your share of the current month's fund based on borrows for your book. In addition, for each new term, you will receive the ability to run Kindle Countdown Deals or 5 days of free promotion for your book. You will continue to earn 70% royalty for sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, India, and Mexico as long as the 70% list price requirements are also met. A promotion (Kindle Countdown Deals or Free Book Promotion) can be scheduled on the day enrollment is renewed. Note that any unused Kindle Countdown Deals option or free promotion days will not roll over.
What data will I see in my reports?
If enrolled in KDP Select, you will have the following additional data on your reports:
a) Month-To-Date Unit Sales Report: The number of qualified borrows through the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library (KOLL) under column "Units Borrowed".
b) Prior Months’ Royalties Report: For every title, there are five possible transaction types:
