Getting Started with Kindle Translate

At this time, Kindle Translate is an invite-only beta for eligible KDP eBooks. To learn more, visit the Kindle Translate Beta FAQs and Kindle Translate feature page.

Kindle Translate is Amazon's new AI-powered translation service that enables authors to translate their eBooks between English (United States) and Spanish (Castilian) and from German to English (United States). As a KDP beta participant, you can create translations from eligible eBooks on your KDP Bookshelf.

Eligibility

To be eligible to use Kindle Translate to create translations, your eBook must meet the required criteria. Learn more about eligibility and troubleshooting.

Note: We reserve the right to determine the types of eBooks that we accept in the beta program. We may choose not to accept your eBook for the creation of translations or to remove your translations from sale at any time.

Create and publish translations

To create a translation:

  1. Go to your KDP Bookshelf.
  2. Select Translate your eBook next to the eligible eBook.
  3. On the Kindle Translate page, choose the language(s) you would like to translate your eBook into.
  4. Choose your KDP Select enrollment, territorial rights, and pricing. Optionally, change your cover.
  5. Select Submit for publishing.

Note: Translations can take a few hours to be created (up to 24 hours). When you create a new translation, you can:

  • Submit for publishing any time during the translation process. We’ll notify you when the translations are live. It can take up to 72 hours for translations to appear in the Amazon store and your source eBook will be locked for editing until translations are live.
  • Start the translation process and complete translation set up. When translations are created, you can return to your translation set up page to preview translations before you publish.

Important: Translations are held to the same content quality guidelines as your eBook.

Automatically translate and publish in new languages

When you set up translations for eligible eBooks, you can enable translations to be automatically translated and published into new languages as they become available for Kindle Translate.

Important: You must have worldwide distribution rights to enable the option. If you don't have worldwide rights, you can translate each supported language and select individual territory rights from the translation set up page.

To enable automatic translation and publication:

  1. Go to your KDP Bookshelf.
  2. Select Manage translations or Continue setup next to the Kindle Translate book.
  3. On the Kindle Translate Management page, select Adjust translations settings.
  4. Under Languages, turn on Automatically translate and publish in new languages.
  5. Select Submit for publishing to confirm selection.

When you enable automatic translations:

  • Eligible eBooks will automatically translate and publish as new languages become available.
  • Translated editions will use the default cover. The default cover displays your existing cover image with a white border and the language at the top. You can change your cover at any time.
  • We'll use your source eBook's list price and royalty plan for all translated editions by default. If you set a different list price in your Kindle Translate Pricing and Royalties settings, we'll use that price for each translated edition. You can edit your list price for your translations at any time. Learn more about Kindle Translate pricing and royalties.

To disable automatic translations and publication, follow the above steps and turn off the Automatically translate and publish in new languages setting.

Preview translations

After your translation is complete, you can preview the translations.

To preview draft translations:
  1. Go to your KDP Bookshelf.
  2. Under the Kindle eBook title, click Continue set up next to the Kindle Translate book.
  3. On the Languages section, click the language preview under the Preview column.
  4. Select Submit for publishing when ready to publish translations.
To preview published translations:
  1. Go to your KDP Bookshelf.
  2. Under the Kindle eBook title, click Manage translations next to the Kindle Translate book.
  3. On the Kindle Translate Management page, select Adjust translation settings.
  4. Go to the Languages section and click the language preview under the Preview column.

Within the preview, you can see the translated content and the cover. You’ll see that the primary text of the work has been translated, and supplementary materials such as the copyright notice page, remain in their original untranslated form.

Cover preview

  • If you choose to publish with the default cover, the preview displays your existing cover design with a white border and the translated language edition at the top.
  • If you choose to upload your own cover, the preview displays your uploaded custom cover.

Note: Occasionally, if a book doesn’t meet Amazon’s 7-step quality assurance threshold, translations won’t be available for you to preview and publish. To learn more about our quality assurance threshold, visit Kindle Translate Quality.

Update translations

You can edit your list price, your KDP Select enrollment, and change your cover in Kindle Translate without updating your source eBook.

Note: Updates can take up to 72 hours to appear in the Amazon Store. Both your eBook and translations will be locked for editing until the changes are live.

Change cover

When you submit translations for publishing, the default cover is used, unless you upload your own cover. The default cover displays your existing cover image with a white border and the language edition at the top.

To change your cover:

  1. Go to your KDP Bookshelf.
  2. Select Manage translations next to the translation you want to edit.
  3. On the Kindle Translate Management page, select Adjust translation settings.
  4. Scroll to the Covers section and select Edit covers.

Book detail updates

Translations are created from your source eBook using its existing book details and translating them, such as the title and author name. These book details (also called metadata) cannot be changed on translations independently of the source eBook.

To update your book details, edit your source eBook. You will then be prompted to apply the same updates to the translations after publishing updates to your source eBook.

Note: If you make changes to your book title, we'll automatically update your translations. If you uploaded your own cover for translated editions, we recommend reviewing your covers after your source eBook is published to ensure they match the new title. To change your cover, follow the instructions above.

Manuscript edits

If you publish updates to your eBook manuscript, you’ll be prompted to also re-translate and publish the updated translations.

Manage series translations

Kindle Translate automatically creates the series for you within 5 business days after your translated titles go live. You can verify series creation by checking your books in the Amazon store.

Occasionally, if a book within a series doesn’t meet Amazon’s 7-step quality assurance threshold, translations won’t be available for you to preview and publish. This may result in an incomplete series.

We understand that an incomplete series can impact readers’ experience. We're working to continuously improve our translation service during the Kindle Translate beta. We’ll notify you when we make improvements and your translation is ready for you to publish.

To manage incomplete series translations, you can consider the below options:

To learn more about our quality assurance threshold, visit Kindle Translate Quality.

Unpublish translations

You can unpublish translations from the Kindle Translate Management page, independent of your source eBook.

If you unpublish your source eBook, the associated Kindle Translate eBook will also be unpublished. It takes up to 72 hours for the books to be unpublished.

To unpublish a translation:

  1. Go to your KDP Bookshelf
  2. Search for your source eBook title in your Bookshelf
  3. Under the Kindle eBook title, click Manage translations next to the Kindle Translate book. You'll be redirected to the Kindle Translate Management page.
  4. Select Manage eBook next to the Kindle Translate eBook you want to unpublish
  5. Choose Unpublish translation from the dropdown options
  6. Confirm the title and ASIN to unpublish in the confirmation window

If your translation is enrolled in KDP Select and you unpublish it, the book will be removed from Kindle Unlimited. However, you must continue to comply with KDP Select exclusivity requirements through the remainder of the current 90-day enrollment period.

Promote translations

During the beta, you can promote your published translations in the same ways you promote original language eBooks, including social media and through author newsletters as you would other published titles.

Please keep in mind, details of the author experience for the Kindle Translate beta are subject to your confidentiality obligations under the KDP Terms and Conditions, so please don’t share or discuss any specifics or take screenshots of the KDP help pages or website.
