Steps for Getting Started

Video: Getting started with KDP

Step 1

If you have an Amazon account, sign in to KDP with your Amazon username and password. If you don't have an Amazon account, go to KDP and sign up. After you create your account, you need to enter author, payment, and tax information. Learn more about setting up your account.

Step 2

Prepare

Before you upload your book to KDP, you need to format it so it meets our quality standards. We've created several resources to help you prepare your book, including guides and tools for formatting your manuscript and creating your cover. Learn more about book formatting.

Want a formatting tool that turns your completed manuscript into a beautiful Kindle eBook? Try Kindle Create. In a few clicks, it can help you format your title page, table of contents, and individual paragraphs and change you book's look and feel by applying themes.

Step 3

Publish

After you format your manuscript and cover, go to your KDP Bookshelf and create a title. To publish your book, you'll complete three sections:

  1. Details. Enter information like your book's title, description, and keywords.
  2. Content. Upload your manuscript and cover, then preview your book.
  3. Rights and pricing. Choose the territories where you hold distribution rights and set your price.

Learn more about the publishing process.

Step 4

Promote

After you publish your book, promote it to prospective readers through email, websites, and other outreach. You can also use our promotional tools:

  • KDP Select. By enrolling your eBook in our free, optional KDP Select program, you can reach more readers and earn more royalties. Enrolling in KDP Select means your eBook will be exclusive to the Kindle Store and will be included in Kindle Unlimited (KU) and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library (KOLL). Enrolling in KDP Select also gives you access to promotional tools like Kindle Countdown Deals and Free Book Promotions.
  • Author Central. You can also reach more readers by creating a free Author Page on Author Central. Add editorial reviews, manage your bio and blog, and keep readers who "Follow" your Author Page up to date on your activities.
